GARDNER — Nearly a week after combining for 197 points, the Richlands Blue Tornado and PikeView Panthers met again, but there was a much different outcome. After 32 minutes of play the teams combined for 89 points and PikeView got revenge with a 51-38 victory on their home court.
“We were hoping we could do a better job shutting down the three and defending Scottie Ball,” said PikeView head coach Colton Thompson. “We knew he would be tough to stop and that was our game plan coming in, to try to stop the all from getting in the paint to him and try to control the shooters.
“It turned out in the long run, even though our threes went cold, we were able to ride our defense and eventually got enough stops to get ahead and finally take the lead back.”
Tyler Ruble’s bucket and two treys by Seth Meadows staked the Panthers to an 8-0 lead. PikeView’s lead continued to grow and Seth Wood’s three midway through the opening stanza made it a 13-0 game as Richlands was unable to put the ball through the hoop either from the outside or in the paint. The Blues’ first bucket came with 1:28 left in the quarter when Cody Fuller hit a jumper from the right elbow. Grant Herndon later added a three ball and PikeView led 15-5 after one.
The Tornado stormed back in the second, using the three ball and timely free throw shooting. Will Moir dropped one of two free throws at the two minute mark and with 90 seconds left before halftime MacKenzie Smith scored a layup to make it a four point game. Austin Atkinson’s putback with 54 ticks on the clock made it a two-point game, 24-22 and that is where it stood at halftime.
The teams played even in the third period. Landon Lowe’s two free throws pulled Richlands even and Luke Phillips driving shot gave the Blues their first lead with 5:00 to go in the third. PikeView tied the game at 26 and retook the lead before Richlands tied the game later at 28 and 31, the last coming on Ball’s three-point play with 1:41 left in the quarter. Hunter Hill’s three with two seconds remaining in the period gave PikeView a 34-31 lead headed into the final eight minutes.
“We went down 13-0, we missed three or four two-footers, then showed a little grit, finally, scrapped back in the ball game and then we just couldn’t get over the top of the mountain,” Richlands head coach Jody Fuller said. “In the third quarter it seemed like they scored two and we scored four. We had so many opportunities, we just couldn’t execute and finish.”
In the fourth, PikeView slowed the pace, as they had previously in the game, and spread the floor. Doing such allowed Ruble to break free to the basket from his post position and he made five baskets and a free throw in the final quarter. Richlands managed only three baskets in the period, all by Ball.
“We thought we did a good job stalling it and trying to force them to play really hard defense and try to dictate the speed of the game and make it hard for them to get in a flow when they did get the ball,” Thompson said.
Ruble led the Panthers and all scorers with 13 points and Jason Weitzel added 10. Ball was the only Richlands player to score in double figures with 10.
“They tried to control the tempo tonight and they did. That slowed the game down and then field goal percentage made a huge difference too,” Fuller said. “I don’t think we shot 40 percent from three feet in. If you can’t make layups, you can’t win basketball games.”
Both teams return to action Tuesday night. Richlands hosts Abingdon while PikeView entertains James Monroe.
