A team victory
PikeView (52) Vs. Bluefield (55)

BRUSHFORK — Depends on the perspective.
From Bluefield’s vantage point, it was closer than it should have been. The (Pike) view must have seen it as one that simply got away.
Mookie Collier & Co. managed just enough key plays to give Bluefield a dramatic 55-52 win over PikeView Tuesday.
The Beavers (2-2) got 21 points and some dynamic defense from super sophomore Collier combined with an all-around team effort.
Pike View (3-2), which fired in 7 three-pointers, was led by the triple-digit trio of Seth Meadows (19), Tyler Boyd (12) and Hunter Hill (10). Meadows narrowly missed a trey at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.
Trailing by 10 points early in the third stanza, the Panthers patiently clawed their way back and came back to tie the score twice in the last five minutes. Bluefield made the decisive plays down the stretch, however, and kept the Panthers at bay.
Collier netted 5 in the final minute, combined with a pair from Jeremy Thompson, to ultimately propel the Beavers to victory.
“Coming in, we knew Seth (Meadows) was a great player,” Collier said. “Coach (Buster Large) told me to play as tight defensively as possible against him when I was in there. We knew we had to play hard all game, especially when we were a little short-handed.
“Our whole team stepped and made plays.”
Bluefield opened quickly and gained an early lead before an injury to Danta Hopkins altered the game plan for the rest of the evening. Elijah Greene moved in for the Beavers and maintained court presence, enabling BHS to keep pace.
Greene, Dyon Wright (6 points), Ryan Davis (8 points), and Devin Goins were steady in alternate relief roles all night for the Beavers.
“We followed procedure when Donta hit his head in the first half,” noted Beavers’ coach Large. “You can’t take a chance with a young man’s health. We decided to hold him out. Elijah was one of our guys who really stepped up and kept us going out there.”
Boyd opened the PikeView scoring in the first two minutes with a pair of treys, shooting the second in his exact tracks 22 feet from the left side of the bucket.
Collier and Jeremy Thompson answered for BHS before Meadows went coast to coast, tying the tally at 9-9 with 3:55 on the first quarter clock.
Beaver powered ahead, leading 19-14 after one and building the lead to 9 points before PVHS battled back again, closing with three, 25-22, with just under three minutes left in the half.
Consistent Panther defense kept the Beavers at bay just enough to fuel the Pike View offense, as Meadows recalled.
“We came out and played better defense after the break. That helped our offense but we didn’t make quite enough good plays to win. Bluefield is a very good team. We’ll get better and keep working for a successful season,” said Meadows.
Pike View coach Colton Thompson said, “We tried to make it as hard for Bluefield as we could. They are a fine team. I was very pleased with our defense, especially after halftime to hold them to 25 points on their court.
“We’re a little young but we’re growing. We got down but came back strong and gave ourselves a chance to win. That’s all you can ask for. I was pleased with the way we worked out there.”
Thompson had a solid game for Bluefield, adding 14 points and consistently teaming with Collier to keep the BHS offense working. His inside play helped the Beavers stay in contention. Along with Davis and Wright, the Bluefield big men complemented each other all evening in a consistent effort.
“Tonight was a great effort by everybody on the floor for us,” said Large. “Several guys who don’t always play a full game came in and gave us quality minutes. I am proud of everybody. Mookie had a good game but the whole team came together at crunch time.
“We beat a very good basketball team here tonight, well prepared with a lot of weapons.
“Now we get to enjoy it for about 12 hours, Unbeaten Westside is coming in tonight and that will be a real test, too. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
Pike View plays next Monday at Chapmanville in the Christmas Tournament.
Bluefield’s tripleheader tonight begins at 4:30 with the ninth grade game, followed by the JV at 5:45 and varsity at 7 p.m.
