Brother bash
Bland County (54) Vs. Narrows (62)

NARROWS — After being down by nine points to Bland County at halftime on Tuesday night, the Narrows boys basketball players started defending like the gym had their names on it.
For a couple of Green Wave guards, that was literally the case.
Brothers Landon and Brady Patteson combined for 30 points and Narrows came from behind to collect a 62-54 win over the Bears at William B. Patteson Gymnasium.
Brady, a sophomore, drained three of Narrows’ seven total 3-pointers and went 6-for-8 from the free throw line. He also scrapped up five rebounds.
Landon, a junior, hit one inside and outside the arc and went 10-for-12 from the free throw line. He went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final period.
The brothers are distantly related to late head basketball coach Bill Patteson, for whom the gym is named. They both obviously spend a lot of time in there.
“We shoot a lot of free throws in practice. Coach pushes us to keep shooting and keep shooting,” said Landon Patteson, who missed his only two free throws of the first half and couldn’t seem to miss after that.
Steven Dunford scored 11 points for the Green Wave (7-3), including a 3-pointer and a 2-for-2 showing at the charity stripe.
Narrows trailed 20-11 after the first quarter and lagged 32-23 at the half. The situation emboldened the win-hungry Bears (3-9), whose jubilation could be heard by the Green Waves in the adjacent locker room during halftime.
“We could hear Bland cheering on the other side and I felt like that really motivated our boys. The third quarter ... that was huge. It was a complete turnaround,” said Narrows head coach Greg Robertson.
The Green Wave rolled out in the third quarter like a tsunami, all but shutting Bland County down for a third quarter that boiled down to a 19-4 run.
“We played a very good first half and shot the basketball well. We got a little confidence early. And then after halftime, we had that really big meltdown, had a six-minute scoring drought and our nine-point lead went to a seven-point deficit pretty quick,” said Bears head coach Rich Hankins, who got 14 points from Jacob Watters and 11 points from Jacob Cross.
“You’ve got to give Narrows a lot of credit. I thought their guards out front played exceptionally well. They didn’t turn the basketball over much and made their free throws down the stretch when they had to,” Hankins said.
Hankins had bet the smart money on holding down Green Wave big men Cole Blaker and Chase Lawson. Blaker finished with seven points and eight rebounds. Lawson had six points and five boards. But he hadn’t counted on the Patteson brothers.
Lawson was happy with his team’s second half showing.
“It’s usually the other way around. We usually play bad the second half. But we turned it around this time,” said Lawson. “That’s what we’re focusing on ... stepping up and playing four good quarters of basketball.”
Landon Patteson, who is the only player on the Green Wave squad who prefers playing in low-top basketball shoes, thinks his team is just starting to come into its own.
“Our coaches have been staying behind us. Keeping us together as a team. We’re starting to jell. It’s getting later in the year and we’re starting to work together as a unit,” he said.
Narrows travels to Fort. Chiswell on Friday. Bland County goes to Graham on the same night.
