PikeView (60) Vs. Bluefield (78)

BLUEFIELD — PikeView threw everything, but the kitchen sink trying to slow down Bluefield.
Whether it was man-to-man, zone or a box-and-one, nothing seemed to slow down the Beavers.
Anthony Eades and Lykel Collier combined for 46 points to push Bluefield past the Panthers 78-60 on Friday night at Bluefield State’s Ned Shott Gymnasium.
“They came to play,” Bluefield head coach Buster Large said. “Their effort was good. A win is a win, but as far as the coaching staff is concerned, there are a lot of things we could of done better.
“We’ll address that next week. We’ll enjoy this one right here for now.”
Eades led all scorers with 26 while Collier had 20 points and 13 assists to finish with a double-double.
PikeView was led by Will Webster’s 21 points.
“It was a hard fought game,” PikeView head coach William Anderson said. “We just didn’t make shots that were open for us. They made their’s and we didn’t make our’s. It was a good game.”
Bluefield won the tip, but it was the Panthers who scored first a minute into the game on a lay-up by David Keen. It would be the last lead for PikeView.
Eades answered with a jumper and Collier added two free throws to give the Beavers the advantage. After a Webster drive tied it a 4-4, Bluefield went on a 16-5 run the rest of the quarter despite seeing multiple defenses from the Panthers.
“The different defenses — we know our schemes — but we had guys out of place,” Anderson said. “When our guys were suppose to cover, we weren’t there. Bluefield took advantage of it.”
Eades hit a three to start the second quarter before Webster hit a three of his own. The teams traded baskets before PikeView went on a short run.
Jason Weitzel hit from deep and Webster converted a Beavers’ turnover into a fastbreak lay-up. Bluefield’s K.J. Manns surrounded a Zach VanBlaricom baseline drive with two lay-ins to end the Panthers’ run.
After a Webster jumper, the Beavers closed at the half on a 7-1 run to take a 38-25 lead into the locker room.
Bluefield turned up the pressure in the third quarter and saw their lead grow to 28 points.
“Our pressure goes from defensive to offense,” Large said. “We turn our pressure into offense. We’ve done that all year. Tonight, we didn’t do it as much as we have in the previous six.
“We switched to some different things to see what was working best. Our pressure is probably what kept our lead up.”
Collier led the charge with nine points in the period while Eades had seven — all in a row. Two came off free throws after Anderson was called for a technical foul.
The Panthers trimmed the deficit down to 13 points on several occasions in the fourth quarter, but the margin was too much to over come as Bluefield held on for the win.
“We’re trying to get better each day,” Large said. “There were times tonight — in the third quarter we scored 30 points, but in the fourth, we didn’t do much scoring. I know we were trying to get time off the clock, but every phase of the game we’re trying to get better at.”
Outside of Collier and Eades, Manns finished with 14 points for Bluefield.
Keen added 13 points for PikeView while VanBlaricom had 11, but no other scorer had more than 5 for the Panthers.
“That’s what we have to fix,” Anderson said. “Our offenses are designed for all five players to shoot at different spots on the floor. We aren’t doing that.
“We can’t just have one or two players make the shots. We need all five to contribute.”
The Beavers (7-0) host James Monroe on Tuesday while PikeView visits Independence.
