PRINCETON — Derek Weiford drilled a game-winning three to lift Greenbrier East to a 58-55 victory over Princeton Monday night.
The 6-3 junior had given the Spartans a 55-53 lead on another three with 21 seconds left in the game. Ryan Meadows answered to tie it up with 8.5 seconds remaining. That set up Weiford’s trey to put a classic finish to a taut Mountain State Athletic Conference game.
Princeton fell behind 21-9 at the end of the first quarter, but battled back and trailed by just two as Meadows hit a baseline jumper at the end of the half.
After a see-saw third quarter, Princeton led 43-42 entering the final period. Darnell Palmer had nine in the quarter.
In a fourth quarter that featured eight lead changes, the Tigers grabbed a 53-52 lead as Walters drilled a foul-line jumper with 51 seconds left. That set the stage for Weiford’s game-closing heroics.
Both teams are now 10-7.
Michael McCormick led the Spartans, and all scorers, with 20, and Hunter Walters paced Princeton with 19, including five threes.
The Tigers return to action Wednesday at home against Woodrow Wilson.
