BLAND, Va. — Galax won consecutive Division 1 state championships by deliberately playing slow, and striving for low scoring games.

Graham rolled the Maroon Tide at their own game on Friday night, defeating Galax 50-35 in the Mountain Empire District opener at Graham Middle School.

Roman Workman did a little bit of everything for the G-Men (5--3), collecting eight points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals against one of the top 1A schools in Virginia.

“This is a great team, they are well respected,” Workman said. “We just wanted to come out here and give it everything we had and hustle and steal and play defense and do everything we could.”

They did it well, never trailing against the Verl Brown-coached Maroon Tide, who won Division 1 state titles in 2011-12.

“Coach Brown does such a great job with them,” said Graham head coach Glynn Carlock, Jr., who called it a ‘marquee’ win for the G-Men. “I really didn’t think it was a good idea to get into a low scoring game with them. They love to play a low scoring, methodical game, and we wanted to try to up the tempo a little bit.”

That was the plan, but the G-Men went patient, taking a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter, and still led 26-21 at the break before the Maroon Tide trimmed the margin to 31-30 with 3:17 left in the third period.

“Sometimes you have a plan and things change in the game,” Carlock said. “We were moving the ball very effectively and I felt like it was bothering them so we decided to stick with it. I felt like tonight we kind of semi-beat them at their own game. They are a very patient team and it just worked out tonight.”

Graham was led on offense by Colby Hill, who finished with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Tony Hood scored eight points, while freshman Nick Morgan scored 10 off the bench, and Thomas Clarke tossed in seven.

“We were trying to get the score up on them because that is what they try to do,” Workman said. “They try to slow the game down so we just tried to speed it up and do what we do.

“It was still a low scoring game, but a win is a win, we will take it all day.”

Galax (5-3), which was led by Caleb Pack with 10 points, narrowed the margin to 31-30 on four points apiece from Pack and Chandler Quesenberry, but the Maroon Tide didn’t score again until there was just 1:46 left and the G-Men were up by 18.

“Coach told us we had better step our defense up so we tried to do that,” said Workman, whose G-Men were able to hold Galax leading scorer Clif Conley, who averages close to 20 points a game, to just seven.

Graham outscored Galax 19-4 over the final 11:17 of the game, led by seven third quarter points from Hill and five in the final period by Morgan. Meanwhile, the Maroon Tide missed its first 11 shots in the fourth quarter to fall further behind.

“Credit to our guys, credit to our staff to get these guys where they need to be,” Carlock said. “I am proud of our team’s effort tonight, they really fought hard and battled hard to get a win.”

Graham will play its next four games at home, including three next week with Narrows, Richlands and Bland County, and that will be followed by eight in a row on the road.

“I am extremely proud of how we played,” Carlock said. “They have a lot of weapons, this is something we have got to build on going into next week.”
