COUNCIL, Va. — Charles McCoy has had a double-double in nearly every game this season. Grundy reached one of sorts as a team Friday.
McCoy posted a true double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds as the Golden Wave pulled away in the second half to a 67-43 win over Black Diamond District and Buchanan County rival Council Friday night.
Three other starters scored in double figures for Grundy, which dominated the second half after taking a 25-20 halftime lead. Baylen Dillow scored 14 points, Jordan McCoy added 13 and Ethan Duty chipped in with 10 points.
Charles McCoy, meanwhile nearly reached his second straight triple-double, adding seven assists. Wes Peck had five assists in a balanced effort for a Wave squad that, at 6-and-5, has already doubled its win total after finishing 3-20 last season.
“Bub (McCoy) has become like a point forward,” said Grundy coach Todd Tiller, whose club has won three games in a row and four of its last five. “He’s able to do a lot, he has great vision out on the floor.
"He and Jordan and Wes work really well together. I think we’re playing really well. Everybody’s come together and they’re playing well as a team.”
The presence of Peck, who played the last three years at Hurley before transferring to Grundy last spring, has freed McCoy up to use his strong, 6-2 frame all over the floor. That includes the paint, where the Golden Wave first took control of the game.
Grundy more than doubled Council on the boards. All five starters had five or more rebounds to give the Wave a 46-20 edge on the glass
“We’re just taller than (Council),” McCoy said. “We were stronger inside and I think our conditioning made a difference, too.”
Grundy had more offensive boards (23) than Council had overall.
“We knew our height could be an advantage tonight,” Tiller added. “We really wanted to take advantage of that by working the ball inside and trying to penetrate and get shots around the basket.
"We got a lot of kids who play football and that kind of helps with the weight room. We were physical, but we also did a good job of boxing out and getting position.”
Ty Mackey and David Boyd each scored 10 points and Josh Viers added nine points for Council.
The Cobras (5-5) held a 15-13 lead early in the second quarter before Jordan McCoy scored six points in a 12-3 run that gave Grundy the lead for good.
The Golden Wave owned the floor from end to end in a 17-1 run midway through the third period that gave them a 42-24 advantage and total command.
“Grundy dominated us in every phase of the game, that’s all there is to it,” Council coach Patrick Wade said. “Whatever aspect of the game you want to mention they outplayed us in it.”
Bub McCoy, who was forced to play the point most of the time last year, says Peck has made his job a lot easier.
“Wes makes good plays,” McCoy said. “I just have to look and find my teammates open. We’ve worked a lot in practice on taking better care of the ball.”
After turning the ball over eight times in the second quarter Grundy turned it over just once in the decisive third period.
