TAZEWELL, Va. — Fast and furious. That described the start of the game Friday night between the Tazewell Bulldogs and Lebanon Pioneers at Tazewell Middle School. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs they could not keep chase and the Pioneers trekked to an 84-46 win.
Transition baskets and points in the paint gave Lebanon control of the game in the first few minutes. Pioneer big man Tanner Robinette controlled the boards on both ends of the court, made four buckets in the paint and shot nine free throws, making four to help give his team a 23-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second stanza Lebanon used the three point shot to further expand its lead. The Pioneers hit four treys, two by Austin Bollinger in the period and carried a 51-20 lead into the locker room.
Tazewell made a charge to open the third quarter, cutting into the Pioneers’ lead and outscoring Lebanon 19-14, but it would not be enough as Lebanon came out on top in the fourth quarter 19-7 to take the 38 point victory.
“I told them at halftime that we had to come out and pick up the intensity on defense. It all starts with defense. If it’s not there, you see what happens,” said Tazewell head coach William Lester. “Coming out in the second half we had to pick it up and we did there for a while.
“You’ve got to start and the beginning, you can’t come out flat. They had the inside-outside game working and we tried to make adjustments on defense, but you guard one you give up the other.”
Malik Davis led Tazewell with 11 points. A trio of Bulldogs, Tanner Catron, Colin Hancock and Juwan Jones each dropped in eight.
Bollinger led Lebanon and all scorers with 19, Robinette tallied 16 while Jake Smith and Will Stamper each had 12.
“We had a really big let-down Wednesday in a game with Gate City, we shot a horrible percentage,” said Lebanon head coach Thad Lambert. “We had a really good day of practice Thursday and I’m tickled to death the way we responded after a loss.”
Tazewell (6-5) plays next on Tuesday at Richlands. Lebanon moved to 9-2 with the win.
