BRADSHAW — The River View Raiders ambushed the visiting Montcalm Generals from the start Saturday afternoon, scoring the first 10 points of the contest in taking a 72-53 win over the Mercer Countians, avenging an earlier 58-57 loss at Montcalm.
Seniors T. J. Stacy and Taylor DeHaven scored seven and six points respectively in the opening chapter for the now 3-4 Raiders, while sophomore Tyree Baker tossed in five, as the View led 18-9 after the initial eight minutes.
Baker led a quartet of Raider twin digit scorers for the contest with 19, followed by DeHaven’s 16. Junior Jordan Wilson and Stacy concluded their afternoon’s work with eleven points apiece.
“They ran out to a 10-0 lead and we never recovered. We’d get it down to seven or eight and the rotation would leave a man open, and they would hit shots. They hit a lot of shots,” assessed head General Matt Smith.
From the 18-9 first quarter advantage, Stacy and Cameron Roberts opened the second period with consecutive scores to extend the lead to 22-9 only 1:07 into the frame.
Tyler Goins, who took game scoring honors with 21 points, sank back-to-back deuces, followed by a Jacob Lambert free throw to pull to within 8, at 22-14, but that would be as close as the Generals would get in the second.
Todd Coeburn’s trey for the View, with 1:14 showing before intermission, marked the biggest lead of the opening half at 37-22 before Josh Hamlin and Travis Duncan scored two points apiece to trim the deficit to 37-26 at the break.
“I loved the intensity today, the pressure. That man-to-man, they gave 100 percent at it. They trapped well. I’m very proud of them,” summarized Raider first year head coach Roger Hale, speaking of his team’s play.
“The teamwork was great today. We did the little things today that we had forgot to do at times this year,” Hale continued.
The third was played on even terms, with each club scoring 17 in that eight minute span.
That period epitomized the spurts Smith eluded to after the contest. Twice the Generals got to within seven, another time to within eight and four times, including at the chapter’s end, Montcalm cut the deficit to nine.
Wilson scored the first nine River View points of the fourth, including five straight in the initial 33 seconds, to thwart any Montcalm hopes of a comeback.
Twice in the final chapter the Raider lead swelled to 22 points before the final 21 point margin of victory.
Continued Smith of his club’s long layoff due to the holidays and the weather, “These kids haven’t played a game since December 20th. It’s hard to come out and play live competition. You get lethargic in practice…Hopefully today will be a wake-up call for them (Generals).”
Montcalm, now 1-4, will visit Meadow Bridge Wednesday.
The Raiders will travel to Pike Central, Ky., Friday before returning home Saturday evening to entertain James Monroe in the second game of a girls-boys doubleheader.
