COUNCIL, Va. — The only thing pretty in Hurley's eyes was its brilliantly executed defense.
The only thing pretty about it for Council was the win.
The Cobras survived two missed shots inside at the buzzer by the Rebels for a 33-32 win Tuesday night at Council Elementary School.
A stickback by Zack Tiller gave Council the lead for good with 1:10 remaining. It turned out to be the final points of a low-scoring game.
Hurley used two timeouts to set up a last shot. The Rebels missed a runner with four seconds remaining and a stickback try at the buzzer by Billy Stacy, who was hammered by a defender on the play.
It was a big win in Conference 47 (Crooked Road Conference) play for Council, which improved to 4-1 in the CRC standings and 7-5 overall. Those standings will determine conference tournament seeding.
The Cobras, who will host that post-season tourney, overcame a smothering halfcourt man defense by Hurley.
"Hurley outplayed us everywhere but on the scoreboard," Council coach Patrick Wade said. "Give them credit.
"They play the best man defense in the conference. They took us out of everything we like to do."
Josh Viers scored 10 points to lead the Cobras. Stacy was the lone double figure scorer for Hurley, which took away Council's bread-and-butter on offense.
The Rebels were able to keep the dangerous Viers covered outside, defended Council's numerous pick-and-roll attempts well and made dribble penetration difficult at best.
"I thought we played great defense," Hurley coach Mark Cooper said. "We stepped up and took Council out of their ballgame. We played great help defense. We did a super job."
The score was tied at 18-18 at halftime and 26-26 after three quarters. There were nine lead changes and four ties in the second half.
Hurley (0-9) took its last lead on a bucket by Dylan Billiter with 1:31 remaining. Billiter finished with a game-high 13 points.
Stacy and Nick Gibson each scored eight points. Lucas Barton scored eight points for Council.
It was a frustrating loss for the Rebels, who have come close to their first win in a rebuilding season several times.
"The kids have worked hard for this," said Cooper, who said he had no problem with the no-call at the end. "We deserve a win like that. We need a win, we've worked hard.
"We don't have one right now, but I can't fault the kids They're a great bunch of kids they come in and work hard every day and they're unselfish. I thought Billy got fouled at the end, but I can't blame the referees, you usually don't get a call like that at the end. We should have hit some shots."
Both teams shot just 31 percent from the field. Hurley hit 14-of-44 shots while Council was 13-of-41. The Cobras were just 5-of-16 at the free throw line. Both teams turned the ball over 15 times.
