PRINCETON — What a difference a half makes.

The PikeView Panthers used a strong second half surge and ran away from the Webster County Highlanders 79-56, Friday night in the opening game of the Alpha Natural Resources Holiday Tournament.

“We’re starting to figure out what we’re trying to do and it’s all defense,” said PikeView head coach Lindsey Jones. “We’re starting to rely on each other and having confidence that teammates are going to be there on our rotations and good ball pressure.”

In the beginning the Highlanders held the hot hand, opening a six point lead in the first two minutes of the game. Slowly PikeView climbed back into the contest.

Seth Meadows, fouled on a three point shot made three free throws and a subsequent three by Jason Weitzel brought the Panthers to within three at the close of the first period, 14-11.

In the second stanza Weitzel drilled another three to draw the Panthers to within a point of Webster County and Zach Meadows tied the game at 21 with a power bucket underneath. The lead went back and forth and Seth Wood’s two charity tosses tied the game at 27 and Zach Meadows’ two free throws with six seconds remaining in the half made it 31 apiece and that is where it stood as the teams went to the locker room.

PikeView came out smoking hot to start the third quarter, going on an 11-0 run to take a lead it would never relinquish. Weitzel made baskets from inside and outside the three point arc and Wood’s three capped the PikeView run.

The Panthers lead grew as high as 26 points before the final margin of victory was determined.

“I’m very pleased with our defensive effort and that’s what we’ve been preaching all year,” Jones said. “We came out in the third quarter, played great defense and transitioned the easy baskets on offense and we took off from there.”

Weitzel led PikeView and all scorers with 24 points including five threes. Zach Meadows added 17 and Wood chipped in 13.

Webster County, who struggled from the field after a good-shooting first half, was led by Stephen Cogar with 13. Dalton Davis added 12 and Robbie Cogar 11.

Highlanders head coach Steve Nutter said, “We shot the ball well in the first half. I thought we understood their offense, we played real good defensively.

“Mentally we had a lot of breakdowns the second half with not getting back and our intensity level dropped. They shot the ball well, we didn’t get out on their shooters. They did a lot more good in the second half than the first. We did a lot of bad in the second half.”

PikeView, now 2-1 will play Princeton in the tournament championship game tonight at approximately 7:30. Webster County, 0-5, will take on James Monroe in the consolation game at 5:30.
