GARDNER — Countering a fast Shady Spring squad with shut-down defense, the PikeView Panthers picked up their fifth win in their first six games Friday night, beating the Tigers 78-38 in Gardner.

PikeView’s girls in the paint, Courtney White and Lyndsay Hatfield, put on a rebounding clinic and finished with nine and eight boards respectively, in only three quarters of work.

PikeView head coach Karen Miller said, “They were getting in the right position to box out. I tell the girls, you’ve got to take pride in your defense, and boxing out is just part of it. ... That’s where games are won, on that defensive end. If you love to play defense, it’ll turn your offense.”

Madison May, whose 16 points were the most in the game, said, “If we didn’t have them getting the rebounds, we’d lose games. ... Courtney and Lyndsay are just awesome.”

White said, “The only way we were going to stop them was to get rebounds, so we could get our fast break going and get points off of them.”

The game was tied 9-9 after five minutes of play before the Panthers started feasting on turnovers and outscored the visitors 9-1 in the rest of the first quarter.

Shady Spring (1-4) went six minutes without a field goal in the middle of the game as PikeView (5-1) opened up a 34-19 lead. The Tigers had 16 turnovers at that point.

Shady Spring head coach Brandon Bennett said the drought was a result of “a lot of ball pressure, and we knew that was coming.”

“We turned it over more than we wanted to, but I think what really got us was, in the second half, our defense broke down a little bit, and they started hitting some outside shots. Once those outside shots started falling, we were in trouble.”

The Tigers drew within 36-26 with 4:42 on the clock in the third quarter, but PikeView closed out the period with 12 straight points and were never threatened after that.

Miller said, “We shut ’em down and the girls were ... taking the shots we wanted them to take.”

Bennett said, “We were working hard. It definitely wasn’t lack of effort tonight. I think that we just got out-shot. We missed too many layups. That really killed us in the first half.”

Point guard Kelsea Collins led the Tigers with 12 points, and freshman center Abby Gwinn led all rebounders with 16.

PikeView’s Brittany Moore had 14 points and three assists. Lauryn Hatfield had four of the Panthers’ 10 steals in the game. Lyndsay Hatfield added 12 points.

Shady Spring made just one 3-pointer, and went 7 for 18 from the free throw line.

PikeView will make the short trip on Monday evening to play at Princeton, then plays at Graham on Friday, Dec. 27.

Miller said, “We have Princeton Monday and Graham Friday, and both of them are going to be a tough task.

“We’re just going to go in and if we play our game, we’re going to be OK.”

Shady Spring visits Meadow Bridge on Dec. 27-28 to play in the Wildcat Invitational.
