WELCH — Although there was no advance advertising, the young PikeView Lady Panthers put on a basketball clinic last evening on the newly-named Ergie Smith Court at the Castle.

Defensively, a full court press translated into turnovers that in turn transitioned into easy buckets for the now 4-1 Lady Panthers, who came away with an 82-26 win over the previously unbeaten Mount View Lady Golden Knights.

Sharpshooting offensively, to finish pinpoint, unselfish passes led to the point barrage by the visitors.

Remarked PikeView head coach Karen Miller, “We got in our diamond (press) and got some steals and some turnovers and got some easy layups in the beginning…We played well and shot well and when we shoot the ball well, we usually do well.”

The beginning saw an 18-1 run after junior Lyndsay Hatfield and Lady Knight Gezelle Brown traded buckets to tie the count at 2 with 7:24 left in the inaugural chapter.

That 20-3 lead extended to 28-9 at the end of the first, with Hatfield sinking 16 of her 20 points in that initial eight minute span.

Analyzed Lady Knight head coach Harold Smith, “I was expecting the pressure and was hoping we wouldn’t get excited and let the pressure get to us like it did.”

Even when Mount View was able to break the press, a tight man-to-man PikeView defense kept the Lady Knights completely out of their offensive rhythm.

The Lady Panthers led 45-16 at intermission and 66-16 after holding Mount View scoreless in the third, despite having come out of the full court press.

Sophomore Madison May led the visitors with 21 points, followed by Hatfield’s 20 and a dozen by junior Courtney White.

Brown was the leading scorer for the now 4-1 Knights with 9.

Continued Coach Smith, “I think my girls can play better. They allowed that pressure to get to them and took us completely out of the game…I’m going to accept responsibility for that. We’ll start tomorrow in practice working on how to beat the pressure.”

Miller related of the win, after the Lady Panthers’ first loss of the season earlier in the week to Westside, “We needed that (win and effort) after the game Monday.”

PikeView will host Shady Spring Friday night.

Smith added of his team’s 4-1 worksheet to date, “I’m happy with where we are. (The loss tonight) We’ll learn from it.”

Mount View is idle until January 3, when the Lady Knights visit Bluefield.
