WELCH — The weather lately hasn’t been conducive for bees, but last night, Mount View used some non-insect “Bs” to sting James Monroe 54-42 at the Castle.
Four of the starting five for the Golden Knights had their last name start with the letter “B” and three of those four combined for 34 points as the View won their third game of the season, behind junior Rashawn Brooks’ 17 points, along with nine points and 11 rebounds by sophomore Kenneth Brown.
Just for good measure, senior Paco Bonds concluded his evening’s work with eight points and nine rebounds.
Sophomore Landon Shires and senior Jacob McKlarney paced the Mavericks with 16 and 12 points respectively.
Brooks sank a floater to stake the Golden Knights to a 2-0 advantage that changed hands three times on the next three scores, two by the visitors and once on a Juwan Diggs free throw.
Brooks downed a pair of foul tries at the 3:56 mark of the first to start a six point Knight run and give the View the lead for keeps.
Turnovers, seven in total, stymied James Monroe in the opening frame, while Mount View hauled down eight misfires, all offensive, in the initial chapter and held a 12-8 lead, behind six Brooks opening quarter points.
After a Brown put back less than two minutes into the second period extended the lead to 18-8, McKlarney led an eight point run with a fast break bucket and a three to cut the deficit to 18-16 near the midway point of the second.
Senior Rasheed Lowe, who added a steal and thunderous dunk in that eight point string, dropped in one freebie with 1:39 left before halftime to cut the margin to 20-19 before Brooks threw up a prayer as the buzzer sounded that banked through the nets for a trey and a 23-19 View lead at the break.
Spoke Knight head coach Gary Brown of that stretch late in the second, “We let them cut it to one in the first half and then hit that three that gave us a little breathing room.”
The Class AA schools played on equal terms in the third, with Shires and McKlarney chalking up a trifecta apiece, while Diggs knocked down five of his 11 points in that eight minute span.
Junior Marlin Marrs came off the View bench to contribute five points in the first 2:09 of the fourth before Mount View scored eight of the final eleven points of the game to come away with a double digit win.
Continued Coach Brown of the second half, “We came down at halftime and talked about having to re-establish our defensive intensity.”
“We also talked about bringing subs into the game and they don’t have the luxury of working into the game. They have to produce when they come on the floor because we’re in need of something. I thought Marlin Marrs did an excellent job of doing that.”
The Mavs had a “B” of their own, namely a baby girl named Harper, born earlier in the day to head coach Johnathan McPherson and his wife, head girls’ basketball coach Malory, who is on a leave of absence while expecting their first child.
Assistant Mike Hines spoke of the layoff due to the weather, “This is only the second time we’ve played in two weeks and both of them have been against Mount View. With the weather and the cancellations, we can’t even get in the gym to practice or play.”
Mount View will travel to Mingo Central, Tuesday night, while the Mavs will entertain Independence Monday evening, looking for their first win of the campaign.
