RICHLANDS, Va. — Foul was fair for Grayson County and it earned them a berth in next week’s state tournament.
Meredith Frost and Autumn Haley executed a free throw clinic and Camry McGrady controlled the baseline late as Grayson County’s Lady Blue Devils overcame an 11-point deficit to beat the Graham G-Girls 61-51 Thursday in the Conference 39 semifinals Thursday.
Grayson (16-8) poured in a sizzling 30 fourth-quarter points en route to a title match up against Richlands at 6 p.m. Saturday at Richlands Middle School. The Lady Blues topped Tazewell 67-61 in the nightcap. Both teams will advance in Virginia High School League action.
Haley and McGrady fired in 21 points apiece. Haley hit 13-of-16 at the line and Frost added at 10-for-12 effort at the line for 16 total.
The G-Girls (14-8) had three players in double digits including Jia Coppolo (16), Lexi Kiser (14) and Dejah Carter (10). Early on, it appeared that talented trio would power the way to a win. Kiser s free throws opened a 10-4 lead with 6:10 left in the opening half but Frost inside and McGrady on the perimeter brought Grayson back. Frost’s free shots put the Devils ahead 15-12 near the break but Coppolo made back-to-back buckets and the G-Girls took a 16-15 lead into the locker room.
The 6-3 Carter opened it up for Graham early in the third stanza, going into the paint on offense to help maintain the margin until Kiser and Coppolo again found the range. Coppolo’s score sent the G-Girls in front by 11, 38-29, in the final minute of the third frame.
That was the biggest lead and Grayson responded with a big effort in the final frame.
“We were not consistent and we did not execute our offense,” said Graham coach Tracy Raban. “We played hard in the two games against them before tonight and came out on top in hard-fought efforts but tonight our problem was we lost our ‘team’ concept focus at a crucial point in the game and that cost us. Grayson County played well and did what they had to in order to win.”
The Lady Blue Devils finished 31-of-42 at the charity stripe and Graham was a solid 15-for-23.
