BRUSHFORK — Two rivalry games, two convincing wins for the Bluefield Beavers.
Jordan Ponder scored 28 points, connecting on five 3s, and the Beavers ran past Princeton 75-38 on Thursday night at the Brushfork Armory.
Bluefield (2-0), which defeated Graham 67-55 on Tuesday, started out strong in a pair of rivalry games in front of large home crowds.
“This is two of our biggest rivalries played in front of a large crowd here at the Armory,” Bluefield head coach Buster Large said. “I just felt like it was a great high school game, and a lot of good sportsmanship was exhibited and that is what it is all about.”
Ponder, who had 20 points in the win over Graham, was the lone Bluefield player in double figures. Omar Logan added nine points and Raheem Reed had eight.
“This is really a good team effort, a lot of energy and we played really, really well as a team,” Large said. “We had a lot of balanced scoring. This was a very good win tonight this early in the season.”
Bluefield, which lost four starters off consecutive Class AA state championship teams, took a 17-5 lead after one quarter, and led 33-16 at the break.
“We really got into a lot more pressure and being a little more effective with that tonight, and our rebounding was better, “ Large said. “Those are things we had to improve on from Tuesday night.”
Princeton, which defeated Shady Spring in overtime on Tuesday, was led by Aaron Ferguson with 18 points and 12 by Ashton O’Dell, who had a trio of 3s for the Tigers.
Bluefield kept up the pressure after the break, outscoring the Tigers 42-22 in the second half.
“It goes back to our work ethic and what we have done here in the preseason,” Large said. “We knew what a tough schedule we had, we knew we had some big holes to fill.
“Right now I am very well pleased with the overall team effort. We are playing a lot of kids, going as far as nine deep. The kids really complement each other and they are playing as a team right now.
That is what we stress is team play.”
Bluefield returns to action on Tuesday at Westside in what is a matchup of top 5 Class AA teams.
“You are looking at two of the top five double-A teams in the state,” Large said. “I am not sure where they are ranked, but I know they are in the top five.”
Princeton will host South Charleston on Wednesday.
