In a rematch of last year’s 1A state championship game, Honaker advanced to the semifinals with a tough 48-47 win over Chilhowie.
“We felt this was more than just an ordinary game in a tournament,” Honaker coach Misty Miller said. “Of course after what happened in the state game, we’re thrilled to get the win.”
Chilhowie had opportunities to come away with a victory. The Tigers last bucket came on a baseline shot by Laken Robinette for a 48-45 advantage with 2:10 left to play in the game.
Honaker worked the clock but had two turnovers, the Warriors couldn’t convert missing shots. With 8.9 seconds remaining Chilhowie’s Mary Luttrell was fouled and converted both free throws to make it a one point game. After a timeout, Honaker tried to inbound the ball but it went out of bounds off a Honaker player, giving the Warriors the ball with 6.8 ticks on the clock.
Chilhowie got the ball inside to Emily Smarr but her shot was blocked by Megan Meade and went out of bounds, giving the Warriors one more play with 2.4 seconds remaining. They lofted the ball inside but it was grabbed by Robinette for the Tigers as time expired.
“The posts Megan and Laken did an excellent job defensively,” said Miller. “We felt it was coming into Sabo and they did an excellent job of inbounds defense.”
Sabo led the Warriors with 13 points and Rachel Hurley contributed 10.
Megan Ray was 8-of-11 from the floor with a game-high 16 points. Meade added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers.
