GRUNDY, Va. — It was, to put it mildly, a genuine defensive struggle.

Grundy recovered from a very slow start and earned a 32-17 win over Black Diamond District rival Haysi with its defense Tuesday night.

The Lady Wave (4-1) overcame a 1-for-15 effort from 3-point range by holding Haysi (4-2) to a paltry 13.9 percent (6-of-43) overall effort from the field.

Grundy played solid man defense all over the court and concentrated it on the Lady Tigers' two leading scorers most nights, senior guards Montana Robinette and Sydney Counts.

"We knew we had to go man," Grundy coach Craig Plymal said. "We were a little worried about their other girls making some shots, but we knew we had a little advantage with our quickness with our second group on defense and our girls bounced back from a terrible first quarter start."

Emily Lane used her height advantage on Robinette on the perimeter and got some help and several different defenders shadowed Counts. The duo was held to a combined nine points.

"Emily is an all-conference player because of that(defense)," Plymal added. "We brought her up as a freshman two years ago and let her face (Brittany Allen) at Richlands and the (Gose) girls at Gate City, so she's seen some good competition and Robinette is good competition. It was a good job by Emily."

No one was able to pick up the slack offensively for the young Lady Tigers, at any point in the game.

"One thing that happens when you've got so many sophomores and freshmen, they get something in their mind and it's like a snowball, the farther it rolls down the hill the more you're thinking about it," said Haysi coach Ronnie Compton.

"Everyone knows Montana and Sydney are my most experienced players and they're going to put more pressure on them.

"I told the younger girls we got open looks, you've just got to forget about the last miss and concentrate on the next shot. Trying to find a positive, coming in here and giving up 32 points I have to feel good about our defense."

Autumn Sperry scored 10 points and Lexi Boyd added nine points and eight rebounds for Grundy, which scored seven unanswered points to take a modest 14-9 halftime lead and finished the game on a 12-2 run that took some 10 minutes.

"Us adjusting to the little zone, finally getting some movement with the ball made a difference. we knew we had to get the ball to the middle, we just couldn't find a way till we started getting the ball in the corner and it opened everything up for us."

Cass Keene had five assists and Lexi Coleman hauled in nine rebounds for the Lady Wave.
