Bluefield hits 14 beyond the arc, drubs Crusaders

BRUSHFORK — Parkersburg Catholic opened Saturday’s game against Bluefield in a zone, and the Beavers made them pay.
Drilling 14 threes, Bluefield scored the game’s first 11 points and coasted to a 76-41 win in the consolation game of the Bluefield Christmas Tournament.
Jeremy Thompson hit three early treys, and the Beavers sprinted to a 19-7 lead at the quarter mark.
The Crusaders rallied to score the first seven points of the second quarter, and cut Bluefield’s lead to five at 19-14. Bluefield’s pressure defense picked up the pace, and Bluefield scored 19 of the final 21 points of the half. The Beavers led 38-16 at the break.
The second half was much of the same, as Bluefield broke a two-game losing streak and improved its record to 3-2, while PC dropped to 1-3.
Thompson led all scorers with 29 and was joined in double figures by Jordan Ponder who had 14. Austin Sweeney had 18 to pace Parkersburg Catholic.
