BRADSHAW — James Monroe worked through three ties and as many lead changes to take a 35-28 halftime lead over River View Saturday afternoon on the Raiders’ home court.

That advantage evaporated in the second half, as River View outgunned the Mavericks 46-29 in the final two frames to take a 74-64 victory.

JM junior Tyler Moore, who came off the bench to score 13 of his game high 18 points in the first half, hit a three-pointer from the right baseline at the buzzer to extend the Mavs’ intermission advantage to those seven points.

After a fast-paced first quarter that saw the two Class AA teams turn the basketball over eight times apiece, senior Dylan Swarbrick’s goal with 18 seconds left in that frame produced the second lead swap, putting the now 4-0 Raiders ahead 14-13.

Juniors Brian Mitchell and Tyree Baker bombed consecutive threes and Baker converted a steal for two points in the opening 59 ticks of the second to attempt to break the contest open before James Monroe answered with eleven consecutive points, six by Dakota Copenhaver, two by Moore and a trey by sophomore Dominic Lewis, to retake the lead at 24-22 with 3:50 before the break.

Moore scored two additional buckets from inside before the buzzer-beater to help the Mavericks take that 35-28 lead.

Baker, who took game scoring honors with 23 points, converted back-to-back goals to open the second half, with a Jordan Wilson deuce sandwiched in between, to start a run that reached 16-4 over the initial 5:10 of the chapter to give the Raiders the lead for keeps.

It was Baker’s three with 3:53 showing that switched the advantage for the fourth, and last time.

Behind sophomore Cody Howie’s nine third period points and seven by Baker, the View outscored its guests 25-12 in that deciding third, forcing nine James Monroe turnovers that acted as a catalyst for the difference.

Related Mav head coach Johnathan McPherson, “We got very comfortable after the half. I thought we had a good second quarter and had that seven point halftime lead, but you’ve got to give it to River View: they came out and showed they wanted it more. It was like we were just content with the way we played in the first half.”

“We had way too many turnovers. This was a step back from where we had been playing (turnover-wise).”

JM trailed 53-47 entering the final eight minutes and pulled to within five on three occasions before River View stretched the lead to 10 at the end, thanks to a dozen fourth quarter foul shots.

Baker’s 23 points were followed by 16 apiece by Wilson and Howie, who led the Raiders with 9 rebounds.

Moore was the lone twin digits scorer for the 2-2 Mavericks, while Caleb Spencer added 9.

Moore also paced the visitors in rebounding, grabbing 8, as JM corralled 43 misfires, to 38 for RV.

James Monroe will be back into action Monday, facing Giles in the George Wythe tournament at 6:30 pm.

Assessed second year Raider head coach Roger Hale, “We tried to do a few adjustments (at halftime). We couldn’t play them man-to-man. In the second half we played that 2-3 matchup and we were able to get out in some (fast) breaks in the second half.”

The Raiders will host Hannan next Saturday, January 3rd.
