PILGRIM'S KNOB, Va. — Grundy and Haysi are in adjustment periods for different reasons.

The Golden Wave are still adjusting to a new coach and a new system for the fourth year in a row, while the Tigers are adjusting to losing two key players, possibly for the season.

They are still, however very evenly matched.

Grundy held off Haysi, 68-62, to advance to the finals of the combined Black Diamond District boys and girls basketball tournament Friday at Twin Valley High School.

Charles "Bub" McCoy scored 32 points to Grundy into the boys finals against Honaker today at 5:30 p.m. Honaker defeated host Twin Valley, 75-61 in the other BDD semifinal.

In the girls semis Honaker stopped Haysi, 61-43 and Twin Valley ran past Hurley, 83-62. The host Lady Panthers and Lady Tigers will play in the finals at 4:00 p.m.

In the only close game of the day McCoy just missed a triple-double with 14 rebounds and eight assists. The 6-foot-2 senior scored 10 points in the third quarter, when the Golden Wave extended a 28-24 halftime lead to 38-30 and withstood several small, but furious rallies by the Tigers, who got within 42-40 by the end of the period.

Christian Jackson hit a 3 and Jordan McCoy scored eight of his 12 points in the fourthn period as Grundy (6-3) took a 47-40 lead and led by as much as 60-49 before Charles McCoy fouled out wth his club up 64-56 with 1:24 remaining.

The Wave held on with a few free throws, from Jackson, Jordan McCoy and Baylen Dillow and defense, including a box-and-one at times with Dylan Wolford shadowing Haysi star Hunter Sutherland, who still managed to score 27 points.

"Our defense probably bailed us out," first-year Grundy coach Brian Moore said.

"They shoot the ball extremely well and we were able to contain them a little better in the second half than we did in the first half."

Haysi (4-4) is without senior starter Drake Howell (knee injury) and key reserve Robbie Yates (knee and ankle). The Tigers got 16 points and 10 rebounds from 6-6 junior Will Ratliff. Jackson finished with 12 and Dillow with 10 points for Grundy.
