GARDNER — The PikeView Lady Panthers took care of the Westside Lady Renegades on Tuesday night, winning 75-28, at PikeView High School.
Westside, who was playing without star player Hope Lester, seemed lost most of the night as PikeView pressured them all game forcing a lot of turnovers.
Lester was out with a suspected knee injury suffered in a game last week.
In the first quarter the defense was tough and buckets were at a premium. Both teams were scoreless through the first 3:51 before Brennah Davis stole the ball and went coast to coast for the lay-up to give PikeView the 2-0 lead. The Lady Panthers continued to crank up the defensive pressure to take a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Westside wasted no time breaking their scoreless drought as Kianna Hatfield found the basket in the first minute of the second period to put the Lady Renegades on the board. PikeView continued to apply relentless defensive pressure throughout the quarter that was highlighted by seven steals from Davis.
Davis wound up with a total of 12 first half steals to help the Lady Panthers stretch out their lead to 35-8 at the end of the half.
PikeView head coach Karen Miller shared her thoughts on Davis’ first half effort.
“She is lightning” said Miller. “Wherever the ball is, you can guarantee that she is going to get it. She goes as hard as she can go, for however long she can go, and when she can't go anymore she lets you know.
“She loves defense and playing hard. Defense is her specialty but her offense is coming along as well.”
The second half saw more of the same as the PikeView continued to force turnovers and score in transition. PikeView ended the game with four players with six or more steals in the ball game as they would cruise to the 47-point win.
“I thought defensively we did real well,” said Miller. “We have been off and haven't had a game since December 20th and we were a little rusty coming out. It's good to get back to playing and to get back to winning.
“The defense was good and then late in the first we started getting back into our flow on offense. We just have to build on this and keep going.”
PikeView was led in scoring by Lyndsay Hatfield who had 22 points and four rebounds coming off the bench. Madison May had 14 points, seven steals, five rebounds, and five assists. Courtney White added 11 points and seven rebounds, and Brennah Davis had seven points and 12 steals.
Westside was led by Katie Smith with seven points and two rebounds. Beth Bledsoe had six points and Kianna Hatfield had four points and seven rebounds. Morgan Thomas grabbed nine rebounds and Kayla Alger grabbed eight rebounds.
PikeView will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Mount View while Westside will also be in action on Thursday traveling to county rival Wyoming East.
