LINDSIDE — James Monroe’s Lady Mavericks used their full court press to its maximum potential Saturday afternoon, forcing 33 River View turnovers, to help record a 68-36 win at home.

The contest, the Lady Mavs’ second in less than 24 hours, was slow to take shape, with the visiting Lady Raiders leading 11-7 with 2:56 left in the opening chapter.

Senior Laine Shiflet scored six consecutive points to close out the frame and propel James Monroe into the lead for keeps.

She produced the second, and next to last, tie at 11 with a pair of foul shots at the 1:13 mark and then canned a jumper from the right wing with 27 seconds remaining to give her team the lead for good.

Lady View sophomore Lindsay Meade knocked down a jumper from the foul line to start the second for a 13-all deadlock before James Monroe scored five straight points and 14 of the next 16 to break the contest open, thanks to a very active press that completely stopped the Lady Raider offense.

In the second, the hosts outscored River View 18-5 and didn’t look back.

Mikaila Morgan and Megan Bailey both came off the bench to score six points apiece in the second for James Monroe, as the Lady Mavs held a 31-16 advantage at the break.

JM suffered a tough loss Friday night, 77-63 to Summers County. First-year Lady Mav head coach Mike Hines spoke of that game prior to the River View one.

“We got in a hole early last night and just couldn’t get out of it. After the early part of the game, we played them evenly.”

The second half Saturday afternoon was a mirror image of the first two quarters, as JM outscored its guests 37-20 over the final 16 minutes.

Four Lady Mavericks scored in twin digits, led by senior Rebecca Sparks’ 16 points. Morgan and Bailey followed with 11 apiece, while Sydney Ballard dropped in 10.

Freshman Kiersten Roberts led the Lady Raiders with 13 points and Kiersten Dority chipped in seven.

The loss was River View’s fourth straight and dropped the Lady Raiders to 6-5 on the season. They will entertain Mingo Central Tuesday at 7 p.m.

James Monroe moved to 5-6 on the campaign, having won five of its last six games. The Lady Mavs will host PikeView, also on Tuesday.
