NEW RICHMOND — In a game of spurts, Bluefield had the final run.
The Beavers hit their final six foul shots to close out a 66-61 win over Wyoming East on Tuesday night in Wyoming County.
Bluefield started quickly, with Jeremy Thompson and Corey Coppola combining for 17 of the team’s 19 points in the first period, and Bluefield led by seven after one frame.
Wyoming East stormed back on a pair of David Carte stick-backs, and trailed by just four, 31-27, late in the second quarter. Mookie Collier hit a buzzer-beating three to give the Beavers a 34-29 advantage at intermission.
Bluefield launched a 12-0 run to start the third quarter, and appeared to have the Warriors on the ropes. After a timeout, Wyoming East answered with eight unanswered points. At the end of three it was 50-43, Bluefield.
That’s when Warriors’ guard R.J. Foldon caught fire, nailing three straight treys and suddenly Bluefield’s lead was cut to three. A Logan Blankenship 3-ball with under a minute to play cut the Beavers’ margin to one, 60-59.
Bluefield, which at that point was 2 for 8 at the stripe, saw Collier, Coppola and Jordan Ponder nail six consecutive foul shots in the final half-minute to seal the win.
Jeremy Thompson led Bluefield with 16. He was joined in double figures by Coppola with 14, Ponder with 13 and Matt Woodrum with 10.
Foldon had 19 and Carte added 17 as the Warriors’ only double-figure scorers.
Bluefield plays Friday at home against Westside. The Beavers will play Graham Saturday in a tripleheader involving a junior-varsity contest, and the girls and boys varsity games.
