WELCH — On a festive evening to celebrate the fifteen basketball state champions from McDowell County, River View used something none of those teams used to capture all the marbles — the three point goal.
The visiting Raiders sank 14 such shots, including seven in the second quarter when they took the lead for keeps, to trip the host Golden Knights 77-64 amid the festivities.
River View junior Tyree Baker, who has already been named Pocahontas Coal Association /Bluefield Daily Telegraph Player of the Week earlier this season, took game scoring honors with 28 points that included five treys.
Fellow junior Brian Mitchell followed with 18 points, all on half a dozen trifectas, including five-for-five in the second chapter.
Senior guard Jordan Wilson finished with 11 points for River View.
Mount View junior pivot Kenneth Brown dropped in 17 points, including 11 in the first quarter, while senior Rashawn Brooks contributed 14 and sophomore Jaquane Imes collected 11 coming off the bench.
The Knights, behind Brown led for almost the entire inaugural frame, other than a 16-all tie with 1:08 remaining and over the final 29 seconds, following a Baker three from the front to push the Raiders ahead 21-19 after eight minutes.
Senior Tim Nowlin answered with a trifecta for the Knights to open the second, followed by a free throw apiece by Brown and Ellis Bryson to ease Mount View back on top 24-21.
For the next two minutes, the game resembled a three point shoot out, with River View canning four, including three by Mitchell and another by Dylan Swarbrick, while Brooks knocked down a pair for Mount View.
Brooks’ second three produced the final deadlock, at 30, before Mitchell sank his third to propel the Raiders into the lead for keeps at 33-30.
Behind a Baker trey and two more by Mitchell, the Raiders opened a 46-37 lead at the break.
Late in the third and early in the fourth, the Golden Knights got a lift offensively from Imes, who scored seven straight points spanning the final two quarters to help cut the deficit to 61-56 with 5:30 remaining in the game before turnovers hampered both teams down the stretch, with River View taking better advantage of the miscues to close out the win.
“That was the best shooting we’ve had for three or four players,” assessed Raider head coach Roger Hale. “Sometimes we’ve had one or two hitting, but not three or four…I told the boys after the game that was a wonderful team win. In every aspect of the game, I was very pleased.”
River View, now 6-4, will play at Grundy next Friday.
Analyzed Mount View head coach Gary Brown, “We’ve got to get better guard play. We turned it (ball) over too much.”
The Knights will visit Wyoming East, Tuesday. They are now 7-5.
