PILGRIM'S KNOB, Va. — Young teams tend to be streaky and Richlands extended a good streak Saturday.
The Blue Tornado made it four wins in a row with a 67-55 non-conference victory at Twin Valley.
The boys win made it a split in the varsity doubleheader. After the teams split a pair of JV games Twin Valley got a triple-double from Hannah O'Quinn and another fine performance from Katelyn Jackson in a 75-63 win over the Lady Blues.
In the boys contest it wasn't the 107 points the Blues put on the board in a Friday win over Pike View, but the offense was just as efficient, at least in the first half.
Richlands, which started its current winning streak on the heels of a four-game losing streak, got 24 points from Scottie Ball and 16 points from Cody Fuller and took the lead for good in the second quarter, when it made 7-of-9 shots from the field.
"It was a little but slower pace than what we like to do, but coach Baldwin) and Twin Valley did a good job controlling the pace on us," Richlands coach Jody Fuller said. "We like to get up and down the floor a little more.
"But, in the halfcourt I do feel like we executed what we like to do a lot. If you're going to win you got to be able to win in a lot of ways. If it's going to be slowed down you've got to be able to win that way, too."
Eight points from Ball and five from Luke Phillips in the second period helped the Blues (6-9) build a 37-24 halftime lead.
It offset a great night from talented Twin Valley senior Brandon McGlothlin, who did his best to keep the Panthers (8-7) in it.
McGlothlin poured in 19 of his game-high 32 points in the second half, but Twin Valley got no closer than five points after the intermission.
"We were a little flat in the first half and I was a little concerned about that after we beat Haysi (Friday) night," first-year Twin Valley coach Matthew Baldwin said. "I thought we didn't come out with the intensity that we needed. They shot really well and I don't think we had that defensive intensity we had against Haysi."
The Panthers got within 49-41 on a bucket by McGlothlin early in the fourth quarter, but Fuller responded with a 3-pointer and Phillips scored to fuel a 10-4 run for a 59-45 advantage. Fuller added six straight free throws to seal the win.
Twin Valley has moved Tuesday’s JV and varsity girls home twinbill with Northwood to Monday. The boys will still play on Tuesday.
