GRUNDY, Va. — Grundy proved it could win fast, scoring 92 points in its last outing.
Tuesday it proved it could win slow.
The Golden Wave overcame a four-point third quarter deficit and ran away at the end to a 53-30 win over Buchanan County rival Council.
The Cobras dictated the tempo with their patient and deliberate style early, holding Grundy to two points in the second quarter in taking a 19-18 halftime lead and led 22-18 on a Ty Mackey 3 in the opening minute of the second half.
The Golden Wave (11-6) stopped being passive and started to attack and started to force turnovers the rest of the way.
They forced 13 second-half turnovers and made two huge runs, one of 13-0 and another of 15-0 to turn things around and avoid the upset.
"We went from one opposite to the other in the span of two games," Grundy coach Brian Moore said.
"We have to do a better job of being aggressive and dictating the tempo and play our style.
"We kind of got it at halftime. They recognized what Council was doing, we just have to do a better job of handling things."
Baylen Dillow posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Charles "Bub" McCoy added 12 points, five assists and four steals.
Mackey and Luke Barton led Council (3-14) with eight points apiece. Josh Stevens pulled down 10 rebounds.
"We were able to slow Grundy down and we were able to execute well in the first half," Council coach Patrick Wade said. "In the second half (Grundy's) intensity and pressure took their toll on us and they forced the tempo."
The Cobras were without two regulars, Zack Tiller and Austin Shepherd to start the game and lost Barton to a knee injury late in the third period.
"My hat's off to Council, they had a good game plan," added Moore.
"Coach Wade comes in here, his team's undersized. Their kids did exactly what he told them."
Grundy hosts Haysi tonight and Clintwood in a makeup contest on Thursday.
