Honaker 78 Twin Valley 48
The Honaker boys were missing two starters, but Twin Valley was without three starters plus three reserves and despite a valiant effort from the Panthers early the Tigers made it 15 wins in a row in Saturday's nightcap.
Tanner Robinette dominated inside with 22 points and a whopping 22 rebounds, including a strickback dunk at the halftime buzzer to lead Honaker (16-1).
Freshman Tayten Sykes scored 16 points and led a shorthanded Panther squad on a game-opening 12-4 run. Caleb Sample's 3-point play later led a 14-3 second quarter run that gave the Tigers a double-digit lead for good, 33-23 late in the first half. The final margin was the largest.
Twin Valley (10-9) was without regulars Austin Shortridge, Brandon McGlothlin and Stephen Mullins, among others. They were suspended after an altercation in a Tuesday win at Hurley. Shortridge sat out because he was ejected, the other five were suspended by TVHS officials.
"I respect what Twin Valley did," Honaker coach Marcus Dunham said. "I wish we could have played them full strength. I respect the decision that the Twin Valley administration made.
"Both of us had what I call 'band-aid' teams. We both had to move people up from the JV, but that's what you got to do in those situations. I think (TV's) kids responded well and I think mine did, too."
Honaker was without injured starter Hunter Lester (ankle) and without post Casey Harman, who was reportedly on a football recruiting visit to JMU.
Sample finished with 19 points. The 6-foot-8 Robinette added five assists and five blocks. Hartley Hilton scored 14 points for the Tigers.
Chase Moore scored 12 points for Twin Valley.
'We came out and played hard, I was proud of my boys," Panthers coach Matthew Baldwin said. "We were in a tough spot with a lot of guys out. I told them to come out and play hard.
"Robinette's an excellent player. If he gets the ball in the paint he's going to put it in the bucket. We did a good job in the first quarter keeping him outside the paint, but once he gets the ball in that deep he's hard to handle."
