LINDSIDE — It was pick-your-poison time, and PikeView served up two varieties.
The Panthers fed the ball low to Tyler Ruble, but also went 6 for 8 from 3-point range in the first half en route to an 81-47 victory over the James Monroe Mavericks on Tuesday night in Lindside.
PikeView (11-6) head coach Colton Thompson said the whole idea was to stretch the Mavericks’ defense.
“Our big guys inside have really stepped up and proven that when the three goes dry, we can work inside,” Thompson said. “Nights like tonight, when it seems to be both going at the same time, everybody does a really good job playing off each other. The bigs work for the shooters, and the shooters work for the bigs, and it works well for us.”
Ruble, who had 23 points and nine rebounds, said, “I just came off the bench just rolling, like a normal game.”
“Especially after playing them last week, I had 41 against them. Coming down here, I expected a double-team … but my teammates just found opportunities and openings and just fed me the ball.”
Ruble scored three straight field goals as PikeView took a quick 9-0 lead. The Mavericks (3-12) got going on a 12-6 run of their own, trimming their deficit to 15-12 on a three-point play generated by Tyler Moore’s floater in the lane.
Thompson said, “We knew it was going to be a battle, coming down here. We absolutely didn’t take it lightly. There in the first quarter, they fought right with us. It was clear they were at home, and they were going to play hard, and they weren’t about to let us just come in here and take it.”
“It was a hard-fought game, and our guys really had to work hard, offensively and defensively, to keep up with them.”
PikeView’s Jason Weitzel hit a couple of 3-pointers from both sides of the court in the final minute of the initial period and the Panthers led 21-14.
James Monroe head coach Johnathan McPherson, whose team has now lost six straight, said, “Ruble, he’s a tough guard for everybody. … I thought we adjusted a little bit there, especially late in the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter.”
“But they were pretty persistent, getting it inside. Also, with us trying to cover him, it gave (up) some open shots out there. They shot really well, too.”
PikeView was 18 for 28 from the field in the first half, including 6 for 8 from 3-point distance, and pulled out to a 44-23 lead. Seth Meadows canned four treys in the half on his way to 20 points.
James Monroe went 0 for 6 in the final two minutes of the half. The Mavs made three field goals and three foul shots in the second quarter.
McPherson said, “Sometimes … we get in such a hurry, we try to force things, and create something that may not be there.”
“PikeView, they’re a tough team. Especially when a lot of players are hitting, they can beat a lot of teams in the state.”
The Mavs went five minutes in the second half without a field goal falling as the visitors padded their lead. Bench players took the floor for the latter part of the game.
Thompson said, “We get them in for a good part of the fourth quarter. Our sixth, seventh guys off the bench really contributed well for us. We’re always excited to see those young guys contribute at the varsity level.”
James Monroe got energetic play from Caleb Hatfield and Jeffery Lewis, who fought tenaciously.
McPherson said about Lewis, “This is the best effort I’ve seen from him all season. He got a lot of rebounds in the time he was in there.”
PikeView shot 57 percent from the floor, going 33 for 58. James Monroe converted 17 of 48 attempts. Ruble and Meadows led the Panthers’ charge with 23 and 20 points. Takota Bailey netted 11 and Weitzel finished with 10.
The Mavericks’ top scorer was Caleb Spencer with 14. Moore added 11.
McPherson said about Spencer, “He’s a very consistent scorer. … Other teams definitely have to watch him on the perimeter. That does create some driving opportunities for other players. We’ve just got to continue to take advantage of those, when they come.”
PikeView takes a four-game win streak into the WJLS Tournament that starts Friday at the Convention Center in Beckley.
Ruble said, “Four in a row, that sounds good, and I want to finish the second half of the season undefeated.”
PikeView’s next foe is Oak Hill.
Thompson said, “They’re very athletic. They’ve got guys that can shoot. They can push the ball. They’ve got a very intense defense. It’ll definitely be a big challenge for us, and we’re excited.”
“We’ve definitely got a little positive momentum. … We’re hoping to ride it into the tournament this weekend. It’ll definitely be a tough test.”
James Monroe hosts Nicholas County on Friday.
