PILGRIM'S KNOB, Va. — Grundy wanted to play inside-out and no one did that better Tuesday than Baylen Dillow.
The senior forward posted a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Golden Wave past Buchanan County rival Twin Valley, 64-45 Tuesday night.
It prevented a four-game sweep by the Panthers, who won both junior varsity contests and won the girls varsity game in a rout, 92-44 over Grundy.
Dillow hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points in the first half and corralled nine boards, eight on the defensive end in the second half for the Golden Wave, who answered every run by the Panthers and never trailed.
Wave senior Charles "Bub" McCoy also had a double-double with 19 points and 12 boards, and he garnered eight of his rebounds on the offensive end.
"The game plan was to go inside early and often and to try and assert ourselves a little bit more aggressively on offense," said Grundy coach Brian Moore, who coached Twin Valley for 10 years before taking over the reins of the Golden Wave this season.
"I thought our kids did a pretty good job with it. Baylen played a super game tonight. He's had some good games all year. This was the best game he's played."
Grundy (13-7) kept building leads, including a 14-4 start, and the Panthers (10-10) kept battling back, getting within one point late in the first half and tying the score at 24-24 early in the third quarter.
Jordan McCoy gave the Wave the lead back for good, 27-24 with a 3, but
Twin Valley rallied to within one again at 29-28 and got within 36-33 midway into the third period. Bub McCoy and Dillow then scored on consecutive stickbacks and Grundy maintained at least a 5-point advantage the rest of the way. The final margin was the biggest.
"Early on we went up nine and that's what I keep telling the kids, we got to find a way to put people away," Moore added. "Instead we usually find a way to let them back in it.
"We were able to hold them off. (Twin Valley) stayed with it, they were game. I didn't expect anything less from them."
Tayten Sykes scored 18 points and Brandon McGlothlin added 10 for the Panthers.
"We were a little flat at times," Twin Valley coach Matthew Baldwin said. "I told the guys in the locker room we played hard at times, but we didn't play hard the whole game and that was the difference.
"(Grundy) got out really well and got some transition buckets, which we normally get, but we didn't get those tonight. They beat us up and down the floor tonight and I think that was the difference."
Tanner Wagner had four steals and Stephen Mullins nine boards for the Panthers. Jordan and Bub McCoy and Ethan Duty had four assists apiece for Grundy.
