BRADSHAW — Mount View, after an extended layoff, used long range shooting Tuesday evening to take a 49-43 win over the River View Lady Raiders.
Junior Jasmine Lash led the Lady Knights in scoring with 18 points, all coming via half a dozen three point goals. Sophomore Kaitlyn Gillespie followed with 14 points, as the Mount View quintet moved to 7-3 on the season.
River View, in falling to 12-6, did not score from beyond the arc, and proved its own worst enemy, converting only 13-of-31 foul shots.
Sophomore Katie Dobbs took game scoring honors with 23 points, while hauling down 12 rebounds.
Assessed Lady Knight head coach Harold Smith, “My girls are improving. I just don’t have the bench to rest them (five starters) like I should. They have to try to go a whole game…I’m proud of them.
“They give me all they’ve got. I’m so proud of them. They hung in there.”
Gillespie scored a put back and one of two foul shots around a Kiersten Roberts stick back early for a 3-2 Lady Knight advantage before Roberts started an 8-0 run to give River View its biggest lead of the evening at 10-3.
Dobbs followed two Roberts’ charity tosses with a turnaround goal and Kiersten Dority connected from the left baseline before Dobbs closed out the spurt with an offensive rebound goal.
Gillespie converted an old-fashioned three point play to close the gap to 10-6 at the first period’s end.
River View, thanks to a pair of Dobbs’ free throws, again led by 7, at 16-9, with 5:03 left in the second before Lash heated up from long distance to help the visitors take a 21-20 advantage at halftime.
The first half was highlighted by three ties and four lead changes.
Three more deadlocks and another lead swap came in the opening minutes of the third chapter before a Destiny Robertson goal off an offensive rebound pushed the Lady Knights on top for keeps at 29-27 at the 3:40 mark of the third.
In fact, Robertson’s goal provided the second deuce in an eight point run, with Gillespie producing the final tie, at 27 with a jumper from the right side.
Gillespie finished the string with a goal from inside and a jumper from the foul line and Lash capped the third, won 15-9 by Mount View, with her fourth trifecta of the evening.
Lash’s trey with 6:40 left marked the biggest Knight advantage at 39-31, but River View reeled off seven straight to close to within one, as the Lady Raiders would also do, cutting the deficit to 42-41 with 1:39 remaining.
Dobbs scored seven in that final eight minutes and Roberts added four, but a sixth three by Lash, combined with poor (4-of-11) foul shooting by the hosts helped Mount View put the game in the win column.
“I didn’t think we had much energy,” summarized Lady Raider head coach Gehrig Justice. “The whole game I thought we were just a step slow. Our foul shots weren’t very good. Offensively, defensively, we just seemed like we were going through the motions.”
Roberts followed Dobbs with 8 points and 8 rebounds for River View.
The Lady Raiders travel to Meadow Bridge Friday night, while the Lady Knights visit Man, Wednesday night, travel to Montcalm Thursday evening, and entertain James Monroe Friday evening.
