Baker reaches 1,000 points for River View
River View (88) Vs. Jamie Darrin (43)
Feb 14, 2015
BRADSHAW — After a tight first quarter, River View outdistanced Jammie Darrin Christian Academy of Justice 73-30 over the final three frames to take an 88-43 win Saturday afternoon at home.

A subplot to the victory, the Raiders 12th in 19 starts this season, was junior co-captain Tyree Baker eclipsing the 1,000-point career plateau, a feat he accomplished with a trifecta from the front at the 4:19 mark of the third chapter.

Baker led all scorers in the contest with 36 points, followed by sophomore Cody Howie’s 19, along with 14 rebounds, and a dozen by junior Todd Coeburn.

Caleb Endicott scored 27 of the 43 Crusader points.

The Raider gym was abuzz prior to the contest in anticipation of Baker surpassing the milestone, but JDCA stood toe-to-toe with the more athletic River View five throughout the inaugural eight minutes.

Four lead changes highlighted the initial frame, with the Raiders taking a 13-11 advantage for keeps on a Howie put back and ensuing foul shot for an old fashioned three point play with 47 ticks remaining in the opening stanza.

On the Baker-watch, the junior had at least three bombs rattle inside the rim before bounding out, with no points to show in the first eight minutes.

That changed in a hurry to open the second quarter, with the Raiders on top 15-13.

Baker reeled off the first 15 River View points of the second, including a 6-0 Raider spurt to open the period and a 9 point run following seven successive points by the Crusaders.

At intermission, the View held a 38-22 lead and Baker needed but five points to reach the 1,000-point pinnacle.

With 5:02 showing in the third, and River View ahead 43-25, Coeburn recorded a steal and converted at the Raider end to begin an 11 point string that was highlighted by Baker’s achieving his goal on back-to-back scores following that Coeburn deuce.

At the 4:46 mark, he canned a bucket and 27 ticks later bombed the trey to hit the 1,000 points squarely on the nose.

Play was temporarily stopped as Baker was presented a plaque by Raider assistant coach and athletic director Doris Wimmer to the applause of the crowd and the congratulations of his teammates.

When play resumed, Howie and Baker finished that run with consecutive baskets for a 54-25 lead that stretched to 58-31 at the chapter’s end.

The Raiders rang up 30 points in the final frame to record the win.

Remarked second year Raider head coach Roger Hale, “It was a little sloppy at first. I think we picked it up on defense because we sure weren’t hitting (shots) the first quarter. ... We always say defense creates offense and we got in a little rhythm then.”

“I’m proud of Tyree, scoring his 1,000th point. I think the others were getting into it just as much as he was getting into it, giving him every opportunity to score,” continued Coach Hale.

The Raiders will travel to Mercer Christian Monday. The Crusaders, in only their second season of organized basketball, will play at Pipestem Christian also on Monday.

JDCA is in its sixth year of existence and is a K-12 school, built by Pastor Clayton Cline and named for his late son Jammie Darrin.

Work is currently in progress for JDCA to become a member school of the WVSSAC as soon as possible.
