BIRCHLEAF, Va. — Defending its home court for the last time that's exactly what Haysi did best: Defend.
The Tigers held Council scoreless for the first 6:10 of the second half and turned a tie game into a 69-37 rout in opening round play in the Crooked Road Conference tournament Wednesday afternoon.
It was the final home game for Haysi, which consolidates with Clintwood to form Ridgeview High School next season and the Tigers put together one of its best halves of basketball ever in the tiny Sandlick Elementary School gym.
In the final meeting in a rivalry that dates back more than 60 years Council was up to the challenge in the first half. Behind 13 points from senior guard Lucas Barton the Cobras controlled the tempo and matched Haysi three for three, closing the half on a 10-4 run to tie the score at 26-26.
In a game delayed for more than a week by snow and ice and bitter cold the Tigers completely shut Council down with its help-minded halfcourt defense in the second half, when it outscored the Cobras 43-11.
After hitting seven 3-pointers in the first half Council hit just one second-half 3 and was just 4-of-19 from the field (21.1 percent) overall after the intermission.
Hunter Sutherland scored a game-high 25 points and Collin Hillman added 15 and both helped lead the way defensively, as well. The Tigers' backcourt duo combined for five steals in the third quarter, when Haysi took control of the game with 14 unanswered points.
"Council has some guards who are tough to guard and I challenged our guards at halftime and that was the difference," Haysi coach David Robinette said. "We did a really good job helping out and Jalen (Sykes) and Collin and Travis (Conaway) and even Hunter, all four of our guards played well defensively."
Haysi (15-6) forced 21 turnovers, 15 in the second half.
A senior Barton finished with 15 points and five assists in the final game of a stellar career. Senior guard Ty Mackey scored his 12 points on four 3-pointers.
The Cobras (3-19) turned the ball over nine times in the third quarter. Their first points of the period came on a pair of free throws by Nate Barton at the 1:50 mark.
"We shot it well and we were able to get in some mis-matches and played a great first half," Council coach Patrick Wade said. "(Haysi) did a good job altering our shots with their physicality inside and they did a good job running us off the three-point line and doubling the ball when we tried to drive.
"They were just able to turn up the intensity. We tried to game plan and they had some other guys step up and when they shoot it well they can play with anybody."
Junior post Will Ratliff contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds and blocked six shots and Guage Hill added 10 points for Haysi.
Before Wednesday's game the Tigers honored Jeff Barton for his 49 years of service to Haysi High School. Barton has served in various capacities in basketball and football, from manager to statistician, bookkeeper and clock operator.
Haysi will now face Twin Valley in the CRC semifinals Friday at Northwood.
