SALTVILLE, Va. — The end of an era for one team.
The start of a memorable post-season run for the other, or at least that's the hope for Twin Valley.
The Lady Panthers advanced to the championship game of the Crooked Road Conference girls basketball tournament with a 62-46 win over Haysi Thursday at Northwood High School.
It was the final game for Haysi, which will consolidate with Clintwood to form Ridgeview High School in the fall.
CRC regular season champs, the Lady Panthers were in control from the start. Katelyn Jackson scored six points and Lexy Vance scored five in a 16-3 game-opening run. Four straight Haysi turnovers led to four easy buckets to push the TV margin to 29-11 at the start of the second quarter.
Balance has been the key for a team that shares the basketball well, and Twin Valley could not have done it better in this one. Jackson, Vance and Hannah O'Quinn finished with 13 points apiece.
"We wanted to come out and pressure the ball and force some turnovers and we were making great passes and playing great team ball," Twin Valley coach Tommy Crigger said. "We were moving the ball around and making our shots. When I look back at our games, when I see we've had scorers with 12, 12, 13 points, I know we've won."
Vance, Jackson and Kara Goodman had four assists apiece, while Jackson and Lakin Keene each came up with four steals. The Lady Panthers (19-6) forced 19 turnovers, 13 in the first half.
Twin Valley led by 20 (38-18) at halftime. It extended that margin to 30 (62-32) midway through the fourth quarter. Haysi (11-14) scored the game's final 14 points.
Montana Robinette hit six 3-pointers and poured in a game-high 20 points and fellow senior Sydney Counts added 10 to lead the Lady Tigers, who struggled early against the much bigger Lady Panthers.
"Our girls will always play hard as they can, but it's tough against a team that's taller, bigger and stronger," Haysi coach Ronnie Compton said. "It's a tough matchup for us and they've got so many good shooters you can't key on anybody."
Twin Valley will play Honaker in the CRC finals Saturday at Northwood and host a first round game in Region 1A West on Monday.
