RICHLANDS, Va. — In an SEC girls semifinal contest at Richlands Middle School Friday once-beaten Grayson County began to flex its muscle just before halftime and pulled away in the second half to move on the tonight’s finals against Richlands.
Junior post Autumn Sperry scored eight of her 20 points in the first quarter as the Lady Wave took a 16-13 lead early in the second period.
The Blue Devils (22-1) forced just a few turnovers, but turned most of them into easy buckets and closed out the half on a 13-1 run for a 26-17 halftime advantage.
Meredith Frost scored 20 points, while Camryn McGrady scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half as Grayson County slowly, but surely added to its lead.
“Grayson County was a veteran team,” said Grundy coach Craig Plymal, whose very young club doesn’t have a single senior. “They were more mature than us, but we held our own and we kept it close and we held McGrady in check until Emily Lane got in foul trouble.”
Lane fouled out with just four points and only Lexi Boyd topped that, adding five points for Grundy (11-12).
