SHAWSVILLE, Va. — On the girls’ side, Radford withstood a 40-point performance from Narrows freshman Maggie Guynn as they defeated the Green Wave 65-55 in the nightcap of the championship doubleheader.

The Bobcats found themselves down 16-5 early in the second quarter when Bobcat head coach Kevin Conner called a timeout to settle his team down.

“The moment was too big for them at the beginning of the game. Emotions were too high. I just challenged them, and they responded well,” Conner said.

Radford (14-10) responded by scoring 28 points in the quarter to take a 33-30 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.

Radford got their biggest lead at the third quarter buzzer on a three-pointer by Shannon Mitchell to make it 51-40 after three.

Guynn rallied the Green Wave (14-11) in the fourth scoring 14 of Narrows’ 15 points in the quarter. A three-pointer by the freshman midway through the period got Narrows within three at 54-51, but with the score at 60-55 she picked up her fifth foul with 47 seconds left. From there Radford scored the game’s last five points to pull away.

The 40 points scored by Guynn was the most by a Narrows player in a single game in school history.

“We came in the game thinking that we needed to stop her [Guynn],” Conner said. “I told her after the game that was as good a performance against us I’ve seen.”

The Bobcats were led in scoring by Jada Penn’s 21 points.
