HINTON — Like the Wyoming East-Summers County girls basketball rivalry?

If so, good, because it's going to be around a while.

An appreciative, standing room-only crowd watched a very young, but No. 1-ranked East squad defeat a promising Summers squad 83-67 for the Class AA Region 3, Section 1 championship Saturday night.

"It was an electric atmosphere," Lady Warriors coach Angie Boninsegna said. "Our crowds have been wonderful all year. We had been used to playing before 10 or 15 people."

Freshman wing Kara Sandy scored 26 points for the victorious, 19-1 Lady Warriors. Another freshman, stellar point guard Gabby Lupardus, scored 25 points and had 10 assists, seven rebounds and three steals.

Lady Bobcats' all-stater Whittney Justice took game scoring honors with 29 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds and had three steals. Twin sister Brittney, hampered by foul trouble, still finished with 13 points and three steals, while freshman Hannah Taylor notched 10 points.

"Wyoming East is a really good basketball team. You have to give them a lot of credit," Summers coach Wayne Ryan said. "They had some kids who stepped up tonight and come through."

Wyoming East had won two regular-season matchups, 74-63 at Hinton and 77-64 in New Richmond, and looked on its way to an easy win after jumping ahead 24-7 after one period of play.

"We wanted to attack and get a lead. We wanted to (make) a statement," Sandy said. "We wanted a regional game at our place."

Sandy was on fire, early knocking down three 3-point shots and scoring 15 points. In the other two matchups it was the Lady Warriors' fast break that had determined the outcomes.

"We like to transition the ball up and down the floor, but if you put us in a half-court game, we can adjust to that as well," Boninsegna said.

But Summers (18-4) refused to roll over. The Justices finally ignited, combining for all the points in a 12-0 run to open the second quarter, and the lead was cut to six, at 24-18.

Sandy broke the drought for East with a driving bucket, and Misa Shrewsbury came off the bench to fire in a 3. The lead was 10 at halftime, 37-27, and the Lady Warriors maintained a 10 to 15-point lead the rest of the contest.

"We got off to a quick start and that helped us a little bit," Boninsegna said. "They made some major runs at us and we held them off. It was back and forth after that."

Ryan liked the effort from his team, if not the overall quality of play.

"There's a big difference between effort and efficient effort. Tonight our effort was not efficient," he said. "When our kids executed and did the things we needed to do and wanted to do, we had a lot of success. We'll hope to build on that and be ready to play Wednesday."

Bri Pertee, East's sole starting senior, scored eight points and had a team-high eight rebounds. Megan Davis contributed eight steals.

The Lady Warriors will host Section 2 runner-up PikeView at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Summers will travel the same night to the Brushfork Armory to meet Section 1 champion Bluefield.

"This region is loaded. There are still four good teams alive and they'll meet Wednesday," Ryan said. "Two teams will stay alive and two teams will stay at home. We'll have to find a way to get it done."
