HONAKER, Va. — The Tigers attacked from all areas offensively and Covington could never get comfortable on offense against a suffocating defense as Honaker won 75-63 at A.P. Baldwin Gymnasium in the 1A West boys quarterfinals.
Honaker displayed several weapons, but the biggest mismatch was inside. It’s hard to stop one dominating post player, but when you have two, it was a tough night for the Cougars.
Six-foot-8 Tanner Robinette had another gigantic double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds, while 6-foot-5 Casey Harman was close behind with eight points and 20 rebounds as the Tigers dominated the paint.
“Before the game we got together and talked about giving it all we had every play,” stated Harman. “The entire team gave 100 percent for 32 minutes. It was super intense, just a good game to play in. We had a huge student section out cheering for us, it was a great atmosphere and a huge win.”
Harman had six assists and Robinette added four assists. Honaker (25-1), led by Robinette, scored 52 of their points in the paint.
The Cougars kept it close early, there were six lead-changes in the first quarter. Quinton Hunter tied it at 13-all with a put-back with 1:05 to play in the first. Robinette posted up to score, giving the Tigers the lead with 52 seconds remaining in the first and they never trailed again.
“I wasn’t worried, but I was a little nervous early,” commented Robinette. “I felt we had it if we played our style of ball. We were able to do that.”
Honaker’s largest lead in the first half was 10 points , but every time the Tigers began to pull away, Covington would hit some big shots to get back in it.
Kashawn Carter had two crucial 3s in the first half for the Cougars to keep them within striking distance. Honaker was up 37-31 at halftime.
Covington (23-5) made one final run. Quinton Hunter made two 3s and Darnell Tolson scored inside to cut the Honaker lead to 64-58 with 3:48 to play.
The Tigers immediately went inside to Robinette who converted a three-point play as they closed out the contest on an 11-5 run.
“We had no answer for Robinette,” Covington coach Garland Jefferson said. “He was very skilled, with all the post moves he has. Their other players are tough also, Honaker has a very good team and I wish them luck as they move on.”
Another key to the win was the stifling defense of Casey Dye and Jacob Coleman, who took turns on Covington’s leading scorer Raquann Matthews. They made it difficult for Matthews to get the ball the entire game, he finished with nine points.
Hunter led the Cougars with 23 points. Carter added 12 and Tolson 10 points. Lester totaled 15 points for the Tigers. Dye contributed 13 points.
