SOUTH CHARLESTON — The season ended for the Princeton Tigerettes, just short of every team’s goal.
Taliah Caldwell scored 17 points and Rhea Smith added 14, leading South Charleston to a 68-39 Region 3 co-final victory over Princeton on Tuesday night.
South Charleston (20-4), which led 36-14 at the break, qualified for the Class AAA state tournament next week at the Charleston Civic Center.
Jamie Vest scored 10 points and Kaleigh Barker added eight points for Princeton (8-15).
“It is like we talked about all the time, we are one step away from being on the Civic Center floor,” Princeton first year girls coach Charles Angell said.
“I thought the girls made a lot of progress this year.
“I think people respected what we did, and the girls should be proud of the effort they put into this.”
Danielle Hall added eight points for Princeton, while senior Taylor Hamm finished with five points, seven rebounds and five assists. Barker added six rebounds.
Hamm and Anna Saunders are the lone seniors for Princeton. Saunders was injured for much of the season, but did make a 3 with an assist by Hamm late in game.
“I think they won two or three games last year so I thought it was a big turnaround,” Angell said. “That is what we talk about is just keep progressing. We have got everybody back and I think our third string off the bench this year were ninth graders. I look to keep making progress and keep getting better.”
