ROSE RIDGE, Va. — Council attacked the basket with a vengeance to earn its first win of the young season, prvailing 65-49 over Hurley in the third place game of Saturday’s Breaks Classic basketball tournament.
Senior forward David D. Boyd scored 10 points in each half and finished with a double-double with 13 rebounds. Andrew Gobble added 17 points.
That duo led a 13-4 run that started late in the third quarter and turned a one-point game into a double-digit, 48-38 lead for the Cobras (1-4) after consecutive driving layups by Gobble to open the fourth quarter.
Hurley (0-3) got no closer than six points the rest of the way.
“We got to the basket pretty well, especially against their press,” Council coach Jeremy Ratliff said. “We about have to attack the basket, even in our halfcourt offense. It was just great to get a win.”
Hunter Stevens scored 12 points and Austin Shepherd added 10 for the Cobras. Shepherd, Gobble and the junior David Boyd all hit free throws in the fourth period to protect Council’s lead.
Brady Justice scored 13 points and freshman Taylor Justus added 12 to lead the Rebels.
“We looked like we were out for a Sunday afternoon stroll out there at times,” said first-year Hurley coach Bart Chambers. “Congratulations to Council, they out-played us in every aspect of the game.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got to find our heart. I think we left our game in Hurley.”
The two teams meet again in a play-in game in the Black Diamond District in-season tournament Wednesday in Hurley.
In the tournament title game that followed, host Ridgeview outran Castlewood 91-64.
