GRUNDY, Va. -- Richlands may have shown the effects of a late start to the season in game one.
They showed none of that in game two.
The Blue Tornado dominated Grundy on both ends of the floor in an 82-54 win over the Golden Wave in Southern Empire Conference play Wednesday night.
Luke Phillips fired in 23 points and Cody Fuller tossed in 18 to lead Richlands, which also forced 28 Grundy turnovers with a swarming defense.
Phillips nailed five 3-pointers and Grant Herndon came off the bench to score 11 points and add three of the Blues' 14 treys.
"That's an emphasis of ours this year to play a little defense, keep the ball in front of us," said first-year Richlands coach Fred Phillips. "And we've got to make shots.
"We've got three or four that can shoot it. I thought we shared the ball really well and we moved the ball and we played pretty good defense. But there's a long ways to go."
The Blues ran off one 8-0 or 9-0 run after another by going deep into their bench, playing 12 before halftime.
After Richlands run deep into the Group 2A football playoffs and a devastating overtime loss, Fred Phillips, whose club lost its opener to Auburn, gave his kids some down time. They were, after all, going to start late anyway.
"I think we've only had six or seven practices because I gave our football players a little extra time off because it was such a long season and an emotional loss there against Appomattox," he explained. "I just thought they needed a little extra time."
Ethan Duty scored 22 points and Christian Jackson tossed in 20 to lead a rebuilding Grundy club, which knew it was out-manned going in.
"They'll run 10 or more at you all night and about everyone of them can shoot," said Grundy coach Brian Moore of the Blues. "I'm proud of our kids, we looked at this ball game as an opportunity to get better as a team.
"The score doesn't indicate it, but as a coach I know that this game helped us improve as a team. I know we did, so we'll go from here."
