NARROWS, Va. — After a terrific defensive effort in Saturday’s Narrows Christmas Tournament girls championship game, Princeton’s Danielle Hall won a shiny MVP trophy to deck her halls with.
If any of the all-tournament committee members were on the fence, her scrappy defensive performance by the Tigerettes guard in a hard-fought 56-41 win over James Monroe probably tipped the scales her way.
“It was a little rough at times, but coach told us to step up and do what we needed to do,” said Hall, clinging to her shiny bright hoops ornament.
The diminutive Princeton guard said she was a little surprised that she garnered MVP honors for the tourney. Tigerettes head coach Charlie Angell wasn’t scratching his head in the least.
“She’s played lights-out defense all year and that’s what we thrive on,” Angell said. “(Monroe) made a little bit there at the end that they normally wouldn’t have made. We’ve been holding teams down pretty much for the most part this year.”
Jaime Vest hit a pair of 3-pointers on her way to 21 points for Princeton (6-2), Adrianna Mitchem, who was also named to the all-tournament squad, added 15 points. Hall hit two 3s on her way to nine.
Gracie Mann, another all-tournament selection, scored 13 points to pace the Lady Mavericks (3-4).
“Their guardplay is really stellar and coach Angell does a really good job of instruction. They’re patient on offense, they took what we gave them and they knocked down some big shots,” said Monroe head coach Michael Hines, whose team travels to Jefferson Christian on Tuesday.
Angell said he and his players particularly enjoyed the atmosphere at the Narrows Christmas Tournament.
“I hope they invite us back next year,” said Angell, whose team plays Lincoln County at home on Monday.
