PILGRIMS KNOB, Va. — It was an inside-out battle. Honaker kept going inside to post Tanner Robinette, Twin Valley kept the ball in the hands of elusive perimeter player Tayten Sykes.
Controlling the final eight minutes the Tigers prevailed 63-52 to win the Black Diamond District championship over the host Panthers on Wednesday.
All Honaker gets out of the win is bragging rights. The BDD tourney doesn’t count in the conference standings. However, the rough and tumble matchup will likely help both teams the rest of the season.
“This was a great game for us, a good physical game,” Honaker coach Marcus Dunham said. “It was a great atmosphere, with a trophy on the line. There was a lot of pressure on both of the teams. It was really good for my young guys and should give us a lot of confidence going forward.”
Every time the ball went to Robinette, he drew immediate attention. The Panthers had suffocating defense against Robinette, he was surrounded by defenders throughout the contest.
“Robinette is one of the best players in the area,” Twin Valley coach Matthew Baldwin said. “I was proud of my big guy (Stephen Mullins), he bodied him up and made him work for everything he got.”
Robinette filled the stat sheet again with 29 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. But Sykes matched him point for point for Twin Valley (3-2) also scoring 29 points.
“Sykes is a special player,” stated Baldwin. “He has it in him to take over at any time and he showed that tonight. I was proud of the effort he put in and how he played.”
When someone scores that many points, sometimes defense may be lacking. That wasn’t the case against Sykes. Blake Stinson was all over him the entire night and it was rare Sykes got off a shot without a hand in his face. When Stinson needed a rest, Brandon Sample was also solid
“Sykes is quick and he’s gotten a lot stronger since last year,” commented Dunham. “He can go to the rim, has a nice pull up jumper, he’s a tough man to guard. We switched defenders on him to give him a different look. I thought Blake and Brandon did a good job, you just have to tip your hat to Sykes.”
Freshman Brett Boyd hit three treys in the first quarter to get the Tigers off to a good start. They led 17-14 after the first eight minutes of play. Honaker took their largest lead 31-23 with 1:52 to play in the first half. But the Tigers missed their last six shots, Sykes nailed a 3-pointer and Tanner Wagner who finished with 12 points added two buckets and it was a one-point game 31-30 at intermission.
The first five possessions resulted in a bucket for the Tigers in the third quarter as they went up by as many as nine points. Again, Honaker had only one basket the final five minutes of the third. Twin Valley closed in and it was a two-point game 44-42 going to the fourth period.
Wagner had a layup to tie the score early in the fourth, but Stinson made a free throw and Robinette scored twice in the paint as the Tigers began to pull away.
Hartley Hilton had eight points, six rebounds and six assists for Honaker (8-0). Sample added seven points, five rebounds and six assists. Stinson and Boyd contributed nine points each.
