WISE, Va. — It’s now three championships for the Tigers in the month of December. Many thought it would be a rebuilding year for Honaker after graduating four seniors, but they now sport a perfect 11-0 record. After winning the Bearcat Invitational and the Black Diamond District tournament, on Wednesday the Tigers added the Coalfield Clash trophy to the case at Honaker High School.
In the finals at the Prior Center on the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the Tigers used a suffocating defense to dispose of Ridgeview 72-63. The contest was very reminiscent of recent Haysi-Honaker matchups on the hardwood. The game kept the same intensity with Haysi, Clintwood and
It was a battle for three-plus quarters, but foul trouble eventually doomed the Wolfpack. Standout point guard Hunter Sutherland fouled out on a charging call on the first possession of the fourth quarter with 7:47 left to play. Ridgeview’s 6-foot-6 post Will Ratliff playing with four fouls stepped up. Ratliff scored on a spin move in the paint to put the Wolfpack up 62-57 with 3:26 left to play.
“When Sutherland fouled out, I thought we relaxed,” Honaker coach Marcus Dunham said. “I called a timeout and chewed them pretty good. We got our intensity level back up and we started attacking.”
The Tigers went inside to Hartley Hilton who missed a layup, but Tanner Robinette grabbed the offensive rebound to score and was fouled. He missed the free throw and Hilton battled to get the rebound, then canned a 15-foot jumper for a four-point possession pulling within one.
Brandon Sample then had a steal for the Tigers and was fouled as he broke away. He made one of the free throws to tie the game. Brent Coleman picked off a Ridgeview pass, Sample led the break getting the ball to Hilton for a layup to take the lead with 1:56 to play.
Robinette faced a double team the entire game. Ratliff and 6-foot-5 Issac Rasnick tried to deny Robinette the ball.
“When they had a player in front of me and a player behind me, I knew that Hartley could get the ball in the middle, drive and penetrate,” said Robinette. “I knew when he drove in one of the defenders would have to step up, that gave me perfect box out position.”
Robinette took advantage with eight of his 15 rebounds coming on the offensive glass. With Sample and Coleman getting steals, Robinette and Hilton providing offense, Honaker rolled down the stretch. The Tigers closed the game on a 15-1 run.
“Once we started playing defense and attacking on offense, things started going our way,” Dunham said. “Sample played some great defense, for a sophomore he’s really stepping up on his first year of varsity.
Sample finished with nine steals. He also delivered eight assists and totaled 18 points. Robinette scored 22 points and Hilton added 14 points.
“We just started playing hard on both sides of the ball,” Sample said. “They made a couple long passes and I would just jump in the passing lane and get it.”
Ratliff led the Wolfpack with 20 points and Sutherland had 19 points in 20 minutes of play. Austin Reynolds contributed 14 points.
“Foul trouble hurt us,” Ridgeview coach David Robinette said. “We played really well as long as we could. We came out on fire and executed our game plan perfectly. I really thought it would go south quicker with my two guys (Sutherland and Ratliff) in foul trouble.
“Usually when we lose, I feel we could have done something different execution wise, but not tonight. Our game plan was good, my kids fought, they never took any plays off. When you have two good players on the bench for a long time against a good team, there’s not much you can do about it.”
