BECKLEY — Wyoming East missed quite a few layups but did just about everything else right.
East (10-0) made 23 steals and forced Woodrow into numerous other turnovers. It also controlled the boards, blocked shots, ran the floor with impunity and even got a strong effort from its bench. And defense? It was 20-0 after one quarter and 44-0 at halftime.
Gabby Lupardus scored 19 points and had eight steals and three assists. Freshman Jasmine Blankenship scored 21 points, including nine on 3-pointers, and made three steals and two assists. Center Emily Saunders had seven boards and blocked four shots.
Woodrow (1-6) was hurt by turnovers and its own poor shooting. Paige Lewis got a team-high 13 rebounds, but managed just six points.
Woodrow jumps back into the fire against Class AA's No. 2 team, unbeaten Summers County, on Wednesday. Wyoming East will host county rival Westside on Thursday. — Dan Stillwell of The Register-Herald, for the Daily Telegraph
