NARROWS, Va. — The Bland County girls basketball team rode down Wolf Creek with mischief on their minds. The Lady Bears rode back up the creek with big grins on their faces.
Bland County absorbed a 34-point performance from Narrows sophomore phenom Maggie Guynn en route to collecting a 69-56 Conference 45 upset of the Lady Green Wave at William B. Patteson Gymnasium Wednesday night.
“You look at our schedule and we’ve played a lot of bigger schools. We’ve competed and we’ve gotten better,” said Lady Bears coach Jason Lambert. “We’ve won three of our last five games and we’ve gotten more consistent.”
Bland County (4-9) led from the outset of the first period, briefly surrendered the lead, 7-6, to Narrows on a Guynn pull-up jumper at 2:29 and took it back for good, 9-8, on a Sydney Walker three-point play with 1:41 remaining on the first quarter clock.
Guynn scored 11 of her points in the first half, but went 3-for-11 at the free throw line over the first two quarters. She missed all six of her free throw attempts in the second quarter.
Part of the blame could be traced to Bland County guard Macey Scott, who was the primary hound to Guynn’s fox for the entire contest. The Narrows scoring engine, who went 7-for-18 from the free throw line on the night, had to expend a lot of energy for the points she got.
“I challenged them. I told them they were playing one of the best players in Virginia. And I challenged (Scott). I told her to ‘D’ it up tonight, play hard-nosed defense and keep (Guynn) in front of her. That was kind of the igniter for us,” Lambert said.
“I told her to wear her out and by the fourth quarter, maybe she’ll miss some free throws, miss some shots and give us an opportunity to win. She did that. She did a really good job,” said Lambert, whose squad only had seven turnovers.
Post Emma Pennington scored 12 points for Bland County and Lauren Gwyn hit a pair of 3-pointers on her way to a dozen points. Lakyn Patterson scored 11 points. Sydney Walker and Scott scored nine points apiece.
Malee Lambert came off the bench in the second quarter for a couple of 3-pointers that helped heap coals on the Lady Green Waves’ head, finishing with eight. Sydny Cross also scored eight points.
“I love to come down here and beat Narrows. That’s a plus for me,” said Scott, who noted that it was the first time Bland beat the Narrows girls on their home floor in three years.
The Lady Green Wave (8-2) got eight points from Casey Wilburn. Collectively, Narrows struggled to put the ball in the hole, shooting 18-for-51 from the field and shooting a chilly 17-for-41 from the free throw line.
“We usually ... shoot better than that,” said Narrows head coach Wayne Gautier. “Any time we play Bland County it’s going to be a tough, hard-played game. That’s a big rival opponent for us, kind of like every time we play Giles.”
Narrows travels to Fort Chiswell on Friday for a quad. Bland County will hit the road for a quad at Graham on the same night.
