HURLEY, Va. — Both teams are small and guard-oriented and neither team
shot the ball very well, until the final minutes.
Hurley closed things out with a 16-5 run and defeated Black Diamond
District and Buchanan County Grundy, 50-43 Wednesday night.
The game was postponed and moved back from Tuesday by snow.
Both teams were ice cold from the perimeter until Dalton Hurley and
Brady Justice each hit 3-pointers to open up the Grundy defense a little
bit and Zack Lester successfully attacked the basket for the Rebels in
the final minutes.
"We said at halftime we were gonna start hustling more," said Lester,
who scored seven of his 15 points in the fourth period. "In the third
quarter we hustled a little bit, but in the fourth we really cranked it
up toward the end."
Lester added four assists and four steals and Justice tossed in a
game-high 16 points and finished with eight rebounds.
Hurley scored 12 points, Alex Pack handed out three assists and Taylor
Justus hauled in 10 rebounds.
Christian Jackson scored 11 of his team-high 15 points before halftime
for Grundy, which shot just 25 percent (15-of-60) from the field.
Jackson did notch a double-double with 14 rebounds and added five blocks
and four assists. Ethan Duty added 14 points, while Dylan Wolford pulled
down eight boards and came up with three steals.
The difference down the stretch, said first-year Hurley coach Bart
Chambers, was sheer hustle.
"Dedication and hustle, that was the difference," Chamber said. "I
wanted them to run the whole game and I couldn't get it across to them.
"And, finally I just had to threaten them, I guess, to get them to push
the ball down the floor and I knew once we did that it would all come to
