FAIRMONT — Bluefield’s young basketball team made its longest road trip of the year on Monday, to face its most challenging double-A opponent to date. The Beavers dropped a 74-58 decision to Fairmont Senior in the Polar Bear MLK Day Classic.
Bluefield matched baskets with Fairmont early, in fact leading 6-5 at the 4:57 mark in the opening quarter on a Mookie Collier layup.
Then Fairmont outscored the Beavers 16-6. The Polar Bears (9-2) turned up their defensive intensity and unveiled a talented and deep cast of well-rounded players to grab a 21-12 lead at the quarter. They never looked back.
In the second period, Fairmont’s lead would grow to 22 points, 41-19, on a Brennan Moorehead trey. The Polar Bears took a 47-27 lead to the locker room.
In the third period, it was more of the same early, and the Beavers were staring at a 60-30 deficit with three minutes left. Bluefield’s offense then began to click, and the Beavers scored 11 of the final 13 points in the period.
In the final quarter, Jeremy Thompson hit back-to-back threes as Bluefield crept to within 16 points on two occasions before falling 74-58, just their fourth loss in 11 games.
Thompson and Collier paced Bluefield’s offensive output with 22 and 15 points respectively. Collier also contributed four rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists.
Donta Hopkins added 12 points, four assists and three steals. Dyon Wright provided four rebounds and three assists. Jaray Williams collected three rebounds, while Devon Goins and Jamir Edwards had two boards apiece. Dominick Taxley snatched two steals.
Brennan Moorehead had 20 points and Taevon Horton added 18 for the Polar Bears, ranked third in the AP Class AA poll released on Monday. Senior Darhius Nunn generated 11 points and four assists. Freshman Zyon Dobbs collected 11 points, five rebounds and four more assists.
“Fairmont Senior is a good team,” said Bluefield head coach Buster Large. “Obviously, we didn’t play very well the first half. We played with lots more enthusiasm in the second half, and we hope we can get that to carry over to our next game.”
The Beavers do not play again until next Tuesday when they host Richlands at Brushfork Armory.
The game originally scheduled for Friday with PikeView was played last month.
