GRUNDY, Va. — The game was up for grabs and Megan Ray went up and grabbed it.
Ray scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half to lead Honaker to an impressive, 58-43 win over Grundy in Black Diamond District action Tuesday night.
It was part of a sweep by the Tigers. The Honaker boys topped Grundy, 84-67 in Tuesday's nightcap.
Ray scored as many points after halftime as Grundy scored in the entire first half. The senior scored seven points in the third quarter and keyed an 8-0 run that gave the Lady Tigers a relatively comfortable 36-26 lead by the end of the period.
"Megan Ray played big inside for us," said Honaker coach Misty Davis Miller. "She pulled some important rebounds and had a lot of putbacks and played strong inside."
Ray finished with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Teammate Kaytlyn Shelton joined Ray in attacking the basket relentlessly in the second half.
Shelton scored 10 of her 12 points after the intermission, handed out seven assists and came up with four steals. Tara Deel added 14 points.
"I thought we had good penetration and attacked the basket well," Davis added. "I was pleased all the way around with the way they played, and the way they played defense."
Emily Lane scored 14 points and Lexi Boyd contributed 10 points and eight boards for Grundy, which had trouble running its offense most of the night.
"They are a very good defensive team," said Grundy coach Craig Plymal, whose club fell to 9-6 on the season. "They throw you so many different looks.
"One time you think they're playing a little triangle-and-two and they'll switch it up and go with a little man help. They're just well-coached and they play that way." Honaker got its first double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 17 points down the stretch. The Lady Wave picked up the pace of its offense in the final 10 minutes, but couldn't get stops at the other end.
"We didn't think Shelton was gonna hurt us with the penetration that she got," added Plymal. "We really thought we could take Jessie (Caudill) and play man-and-a-half on Deel and we kinda held Deel down
a little bit.
"But you can go down the scorebook, they're always having eight points here and 10 points there. But Ray was the difference tonight. She just out-hustled us in there she got position she worked we were missing layups and I thought we got beat by a better team than us tonight."
