PRINCETON — At Mercer Christian on Thursday night, Montcalm was determined to make someone other than Daniel Boothe beat them.
Someone else did.
Chandler Scott hit seven 3-pointers as he erupted for a career-high 35 points, leading the Cavaliers to a 74-60 win over the Generals.
“We knew that given the opportunity, Boothe is going to kill you. He’s that good of a shooter,” said Montcalm head coach Matt Smith, who assigned Cody Farmer to shadow Boothe in the Generals’ box-and-one defense.
“(Farmer) did an amazing job and worked his tail off. All the points Boothe got tonight, he earned.”
Boothe finished with 15 points — including an improbable off-balance scoop shot while diving for a loose ball off the bounce. But he also collected 11 rebounds and helped create opportunities to dole out six assists, most of them to Scott.
“He’s a good defender. That’s probably the best box-and-one I’ve seen all year. He gave me no easy shots,” said Boothe. “But that’s just part of the game. You’ve got to adjust ... especially get your teammates involved, like Chandler.”
Scott said he expects the pressure to be on him to shoot when Boothe faces a gimmick defense.
“I practice 3s a lot so whenever they go into a box-and-one he can drive it in and dish it out to me for the 3,” said Scott, who collected seven steals on the night.
“We fought back and we did pretty well toward the end,” said Scott, who scored 16 of his points in the first half.
Scott and Jacob Dove each hit trifectas during the Cavaliers’ 10-2 run that opened the first quarter. Zach Coeburn, who ended up hitting eight treys on his way to 28 points for Montcalm, knocked down four 3’s to bring it to within 17-16 with 1:47 remaining. The Generals went up 19-18 on Trevor Poynter’s trey at the end of the quarter.
The lead changed hands four times before MCA got in front on a pair of Boothe free throws, staying a step ahead to lead 35-33 at the half.
The Generals regained the 42-41 lead at 5:12 in the third period on a Craig Casto bucket. At around the two-minute mark Scott effected a steal, initiated transition and kicked it back to Boothe for a 3-pointer that put MCA ahead for good 48-45.
It was the first of three successive steals by Scott that finally propelled the Cavs toward permanent separation from Montcalm.
“We’ve faced the box-and-one many times this season and Cody played the best defense on Daniel of any school we’ve played. It was really, really good. We tried double screens, single screens,” said MCA coach Jeff Boothe.
“Daniel was having kind of an off-night too, and when we realized what was going on we knew to give Chandler the ball,” he said.
Dove had 10 rebounds for Mercer Christian (14-7). Wesley Hobbs rounded up six boards. Farmer fired up 12 points for Montcalm (1-10) and Casto finished with nine after going 3-for-10 at the free throw line.
“At times we played extremely well. And we had moments where we couldn’t make a shot,” said Montcalm head coach Matt Smith. “When you’re playing against a team that shoots that well, you can’t have empty possessions. We just had too many empty possession.”
